About Surah Al-An'am
Surah Al-An'am is the sixth chapter of the Qur'an and contains 165 Ayahs. It is a Makki Surah that strongly emphasizes the Oneness of Allah, His power over creation, the truth of revelation, and accountability before Him. The Surah challenges the beliefs of those who associate partners with Allah and reminds people to recognize His signs in the heavens, the earth, and within their own lives. It also discusses Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, the Prophets, lawful and unlawful matters, and false customs concerning cattle.

وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ ٱسْمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِسْقٌۭ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ لَيُوحُونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَوْلِيَآئِهِمْ لِيُجَٰدِلُوكُمْ ۖ وَإِنْ أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ إِنَّكُمْ لَمُشْرِكُونَ
English Meaning
Do not eat from what has not been slaughtered with the name of Allah mentioned over it, for that is disobedience. The devils inspire their allies to argue about such matters, and following them in opposition to Allah's command can lead a person into Shirk.
Urdu Meaning
اور اس چیز میں سے نہ کھاؤ جس پر اللہ کا نام نہ لیا گیا ہو، بے شک یہ نافرمانی ہے۔ شیاطین اپنے ساتھیوں کو تم سے بحث کرنے کے لیے وسوسے دیتے ہیں، اور اگر تم ان کی بات مانو گے تو تم شرک کرنے والوں میں شامل ہوجاؤ گے۔
Explanation
This verse teaches believers to respect Allah's guidance regarding lawful food and not allow deceptive arguments to make them abandon His commands.
أَوَمَن كَانَ مَيْتًۭا فَأَحْيَيْنَٰهُ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُۥ نُورًۭا يَمْشِى بِهِۦ فِى ٱلنَّاسِ كَمَن مَّثَلُهُۥ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍۢ مِّنْهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
English Meaning
Can the one who was spiritually dead, whom We gave life and light to walk with among people, be like one who remains in darkness and cannot escape it? In this way, the deeds of those who reject faith are made appealing to them.
Urdu Meaning
کیا وہ شخص جو مردہ تھا پھر ہم نے اسے زندگی دی اور اسے ایسا نور عطا کیا جس کے ساتھ وہ لوگوں میں چلتا ہے، اس شخص جیسا ہوسکتا ہے جو تاریکیوں میں ہے اور ان سے نکل نہیں سکتا؟ اسی طرح کافروں کے اعمال ان کے لیے خوشنما بنا دیے گئے ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah compares guidance to life and light, while misguidance is compared to darkness. Faith gives a person spiritual direction and clarity.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرْيَةٍ أَكَٰبِرَ مُجْرِمِيهَا لِيَمْكُرُوا۟ فِيهَا ۖ وَمَا يَمْكُرُونَ إِلَّا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ
English Meaning
In this way, We have allowed the greatest criminals in every community to scheme within it. Yet their schemes only work against themselves, although they do not realize it.
Urdu Meaning
اور اسی طرح ہم نے ہر بستی میں اس کے بڑے مجرم بنائے تاکہ وہ اس میں سازشیں کریں، لیکن وہ اپنی ہی جانوں کے خلاف سازش کرتے ہیں اور انہیں اس کا احساس نہیں ہوتا۔
Explanation
People who use their influence to oppose truth may believe they are harming others, but their wrongdoing ultimately harms themselves.
وَإِذَا جَآءَتْهُمْ ءَايَةٌۭ قَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ حَتَّىٰ نُؤْتَىٰ مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ رُسُلُ ٱللَّهِ ۘ ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ يَجْعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُۥ ۗ سَيُصِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ صَغَارٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعَذَابٌۭ شَدِيدٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَمْكُرُونَ
English Meaning
When a sign came to them, they said they would not believe until they received something like what Allah's messengers had received. Allah knows best where to place His message. Those who persist in wrongdoing will face humiliation and severe punishment for their schemes.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ان کے پاس کوئی نشانی آتی تو کہتے کہ ہم ہرگز ایمان نہیں لائیں گے جب تک ہمیں بھی وہی کچھ نہ دیا جائے جو اللہ کے رسولوں کو دیا گیا۔ اللہ خوب جانتا ہے کہ اپنی رسالت کہاں رکھے۔ جو لوگ جرم کرتے ہیں انہیں ان کی سازشوں کے سبب اللہ کے ہاں ذلت اور سخت عذاب پہنچے گا۔
Explanation
Some people rejected revelation because they wanted prophetic status for themselves or their preferred people. Allah reminds them that Prophethood is granted according to His perfect wisdom.
فَمَن يُرِدِ ٱللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُۥ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُۥ لِلْإِسْلَٰمِ ۖ وَمَن يُرِدْ أَن يُضِلَّهُۥ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُۥ ضَيِّقًا حَرَجًۭا كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَجْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرِّجْسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
English Meaning
Whoever Allah guides, He opens their heart to Islam. Whoever turns away into misguidance finds their heart constricted, as though struggling to rise into the sky. In this way Allah places spiritual impurity upon those who do not believe.
Urdu Meaning
جسے اللہ ہدایت دینا چاہتا ہے اس کا سینہ اسلام کے لیے کھول دیتا ہے، اور جسے گمراہی میں چھوڑ دیتا ہے اس کا سینہ تنگ اور گھٹا ہوا ہوجاتا ہے، گویا وہ آسمان کی طرف چڑھ رہا ہو۔ اسی طرح اللہ ان لوگوں پر گندگی ڈالتا ہے جو ایمان نہیں لاتے۔
Explanation
The verse describes the inner openness that accompanies accepting Islam and the spiritual difficulty associated with persistent rejection.
وَهَٰذَا صِرَٰطُ رَبِّكَ مُسْتَقِيمًۭا ۗ قَدْ فَصَّلْنَا ٱلْءَايَٰتِ لِقَوْمٍۢ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
English Meaning
This is the straight path of your Lord. We have clearly explained the signs for people who take heed.
Urdu Meaning
اور یہی تمہارے رب کا سیدھا راستہ ہے۔ ہم نے ان لوگوں کے لیے اپنی آیات کو کھول کر بیان کردیا ہے جو نصیحت حاصل کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah's guidance is described as a straight path. The Qur'an provides signs and lessons for those willing to remember and reflect.
لَهُمْ دَارُ ٱلسَّلَٰمِ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ ۖ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
English Meaning
For them is the Home of Peace with their Lord, and He is their protecting Guardian because of what they used to do.
Urdu Meaning
ان کے لیے ان کے رب کے پاس سلامتی کا گھر ہے، اور وہ ان کے اعمال کے سبب ان کا مددگار اور سرپرست ہے۔
Explanation
Those who follow Allah's guidance are promised the Home of Peace. Their faith is reflected in righteous actions.
وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًۭا يَٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ قَدِ ٱسْتَكْثَرْتُم مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ ۖ وَقَالَ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ رَبَّنَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ بَعْضُنَا بِبَعْضٍۢ وَبَلَغْنَآ أَجَلَنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَجَّلْتَ لَنَا ۚ قَالَ ٱلنَّارُ مَثْوَىٰكُمْ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
English Meaning
On the Day Allah gathers them all, He will address the jinn and mention how many people they led astray. Their human allies will admit that they benefited from one another and eventually reached the appointed time. Allah will then declare the Fire as their dwelling, subject to His judgment. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
Urdu Meaning
اور جس دن اللہ سب کو جمع کرے گا، فرمایا جائے گا: اے جنات کی جماعت! تم نے بہت سے انسانوں کو اپنے زیر اثر کرلیا۔ انسانوں میں سے ان کے ساتھی کہیں گے: اے ہمارے رب! ہم نے ایک دوسرے سے فائدہ اٹھایا اور اس مدت کو پہنچ گئے جو تو نے ہمارے لیے مقرر کی تھی۔ اللہ فرمائے گا: تمہارا ٹھکانا آگ ہے، تم اس میں رہو گے مگر جو اللہ چاہے۔ بے شک تمہارا رب حکمت والا اور علم والا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse describes the Day of Judgment when the relationship between misleading forces and those who followed them will be exposed. Everyone will be accountable for their choices.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُوَلِّى بَعْضَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بَعْضًۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
English Meaning
In this way, We allow some wrongdoers to become allies of others because of what they used to earn.
Urdu Meaning
اور اسی طرح ہم بعض ظالموں کو بعض کا ساتھی بنا دیتے ہیں ان اعمال کے سبب جو وہ کرتے رہے۔
Explanation
Wrongdoing can create relationships in which people support one another in sin and injustice. Their connection is ultimately tied to the choices they make.
يَٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌۭ مِّنكُمْ يَقُصُّونَ عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَٰتِى وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَٰذَا ۚ قَالُوا۟ شَهِدْنَا عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِنَا ۚ وَغَرَّتْهُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَشَهِدُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ كَٰفِرِينَ
English Meaning
Allah will ask the jinn and humans whether messengers came to them, reciting His signs and warning them about this Day. They will admit that they were warned, but worldly life deceived them, and they will testify against themselves that they rejected the truth.
Urdu Meaning
اے جنات اور انسانوں کی جماعت! کیا تمہارے پاس تم ہی میں سے رسول نہیں آئے تھے جو تمہیں میری آیات سناتے اور تمہیں اس دن کی ملاقات سے ڈراتے؟ وہ کہیں گے: ہم اپنے خلاف گواہی دیتے ہیں۔ انہیں دنیا کی زندگی نے دھوکے میں ڈال دیا تھا اور وہ خود اپنے خلاف گواہی دیں گے کہ وہ کافر تھے۔
Explanation
The verse emphasizes that people will not be able to claim that they were completely unaware of the message. Worldly distractions can cause people to neglect the Hereafter.
ذَٰلِكَ أَن لَّمْ يَكُن رَّبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٍۢ وَأَهْلُهَا غَٰفِلُونَ
English Meaning
That is because your Lord would not destroy communities unjustly while their people were unaware.
Urdu Meaning
یہ اس لیے کہ تمہارا رب بستیوں کو اس حال میں ظلم سے ہلاک نہیں کرتا کہ ان کے لوگ بے خبر ہوں۔
Explanation
Allah's judgment is not arbitrary or unjust. The verse highlights the importance of warning and accountability before punishment.
وَلِكُلٍّۢ دَرَجَٰتٌۭ مِّمَّا عَمِلُوا۟ ۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ
English Meaning
Everyone will have degrees according to what they have done, and your Lord is never unaware of their actions.
Urdu Meaning
اور ہر شخص کے لیے اس کے اعمال کے مطابق درجات ہیں، اور تمہارا رب ان کے اعمال سے غافل نہیں۔
Explanation
People's deeds have consequences, and Allah knows every person's actions. No good or bad deed escapes His knowledge.
وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْغَنِىُّ ذُو ٱلرَّحْمَةِ ۚ إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفْ مِنۢ بَعْدِكُم مَّا يَشَآءُ كَمَآ أَنشَأَكُم مِّن ذُرِّيَّةِ قَوْمٍ ءَاخَرِينَ
English Meaning
Your Lord is completely free of need and possesses mercy. If He wills, He can remove you and replace you with others, just as He brought you from the descendants of another people.
Urdu Meaning
اور تمہارا رب بے نیاز اور رحمت والا ہے۔ اگر وہ چاہے تو تمہیں ختم کرکے تمہارے بعد جسے چاہے لے آئے، جیسے اس نے تمہیں ایک دوسری قوم کی نسل سے پیدا کیا۔
Explanation
Allah does not depend upon His creation. Humanity depends upon Him, while He can replace one generation or people with another according to His wisdom.
إِنَّ مَا تُوعَدُونَ لَءَاتٍۢ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ
English Meaning
What you have been promised will certainly come, and you cannot escape Allah's decree.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک جس چیز کا تم سے وعدہ کیا گیا ہے وہ ضرور آنے والی ہے، اور تم اللہ کو عاجز نہیں کرسکتے۔
Explanation
The verse confirms that Allah's promises concerning accountability and the Hereafter will come to pass. Human beings cannot escape His ultimate judgment.
قُلْ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنِّى عَامِلٌۭ ۖ فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَن تَكُونُ لَهُۥ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلدَّارِ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
English Meaning
Say, “My people, continue according to your position, and I will continue upon mine. Soon you will know who will have the final outcome of the Home. Surely, the wrongdoers will not succeed.”
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اے میری قوم! تم اپنی جگہ اپنے عمل کرتے رہو، میں بھی اپنا عمل کرتا ہوں۔ عنقریب تم جان لو گے کہ انجام کس کے حق میں ہے۔ بے شک ظالم کامیاب نہیں ہوں گے۔
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to remain firm while those who reject the truth continue on their course. Ultimately, the final outcome will reveal the truth.
وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ مِمَّا ذَرَأَ مِنَ ٱلْحَرْثِ وَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ نَصِيبًۭا فَقَالُوا۟ هَٰذَا لِلَّهِ بِزَعْمِهِمْ وَهَٰذَا لِشُرَكَآئِنَا ۖ فَمَا كَانَ لِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ فَلَا يَصِلُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ فَهُوَ يَصِلُ إِلَىٰ شُرَكَآئِهِمْ ۗ سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
English Meaning
They assigned a portion of the crops and livestock Allah created to Him and another portion to their supposed partners. Yet what they assigned to their partners would not reach Allah, while what they assigned to Allah could be given to their partners. How evil was their judgment.
Urdu Meaning
اور انہوں نے اللہ کی پیدا کی ہوئی کھیتی اور مویشیوں میں سے ایک حصہ اللہ کے لیے اور ایک حصہ اپنے شریکوں کے لیے مقرر کر رکھا تھا۔ پھر جو حصہ شریکوں کے لیے ہوتا وہ اللہ تک نہ پہنچتا، جبکہ اللہ کا حصہ ان کے شریکوں تک پہنچ جاتا۔ کیا ہی برا فیصلہ تھا جو وہ کرتے تھے۔
Explanation
The verse exposes the contradiction in their religious practices. They claimed to honor Allah while giving preference to their false partners.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ زَيَّنَ لِكَثِيرٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ قَتْلَ أَوْلَٰدِهِمْ شُرَكَآؤُهُمْ لِيُرْدُوهُمْ وَلِيَلْبِسُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ دِينَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فَعَلُوهُ ۖ فَذَرْهُمْ وَمَا يَفْتَرُونَ
English Meaning
In this way, their supposed partners made the killing of children appear acceptable to many of the polytheists, leading them toward destruction and confusing their religion. Had Allah willed, they would not have done it. So leave them with what they invented.
Urdu Meaning
اسی طرح ان کے شریکوں نے بہت سے مشرکین کے لیے ان کی اولاد کو قتل کرنا خوشنما بنا دیا تاکہ انہیں ہلاکت میں ڈالیں اور ان کے دین کو ان پر مشتبہ کردیں۔ اگر اللہ چاہتا تو وہ ایسا نہ کرتے، پس انہیں ان کی گھڑی ہوئی باتوں کے ساتھ چھوڑ دیں۔
Explanation
The verse condemns the practice of killing children and shows how false religious beliefs can make terrible actions appear acceptable.
وَقَالُوا۟ هَٰذِهِۦٓ أَنْعَٰمٌۭ وَحَرْثٌ حِجْرٌۭ لَّا يَطْعَمُهَآ إِلَّا مَن نَّشَآءُ بِزَعْمِهِمْ وَأَنْعَٰمٌ حُرِّمَتْ ظُهُورُهَا وَأَنْعَٰمٌۭ لَّا يَذْكُرُونَ ٱسْمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا ٱفْتِرَآءً عَلَيْهِ ۚ سَيَجْزِيهِم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ
English Meaning
They claimed that certain livestock and crops were restricted, allowing only those they chose to consume them. They also declared certain animals forbidden for riding and neglected Allah's name over others—all of this being fabricated against Allah. They will be recompensed for these false claims.
Urdu Meaning
اور انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ مویشی اور کھیتی ممنوع ہیں، انہیں ہماری مرضی کے سوا کوئی نہیں کھا سکتا۔ اور کچھ مویشی ایسے ہیں جن کی سواری حرام قرار دی، اور کچھ پر اللہ کا نام نہیں لیتے، یہ سب اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھ کر کہتے تھے۔ انہیں ان کے جھوٹ کا بدلہ دیا جائے گا۔
Explanation
They invented religious restrictions without authority from Allah. The verse warns against falsely declaring something Halal or Haram in Allah's name.
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا فِى بُطُونِ هَٰذِهِ ٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ خَالِصَةٌۭ لِّذُكُورِنَا وَمُحَرَّمٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِنَا ۖ وَإِن يَكُن مَّيْتَةًۭ فَهُمْ فِيهِ شُرَكَآءُ ۚ سَيَجْزِيهِمْ وَصْفَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
English Meaning
They also claimed that what was in the wombs of certain animals was reserved for their men and forbidden to their women, but if it was born dead, then everyone could share it. Allah would recompense them for these fabricated descriptions. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

اور انہوں نے کہا کہ ان مویشیوں کے پیٹ میں جو کچھ ہے وہ ہمارے مردوں کے لیے مخصوص ہے اور ہماری عورتوں پر حرام ہے، اور اگر وہ مردہ پیدا ہو تو سب اس میں شریک ہوں گے۔ اللہ انہیں ان کی بنائی ہوئی باتوں کا بدلہ دے گا۔ بے شک وہ حکمت والا، علم والا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse exposes arbitrary rules that were based on social preference rather than divine revelation. Allah knows the truth behind every such claim.
قَدْ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَتَلُوٓا۟ أَوْلَٰدَهُمْ سَفَهًۢا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۢ وَحَرَّمُوا۟ مَا رَزَقَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱفْتِرَآءً عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ قَدْ ضَلُّوا۟ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهْتَدِينَ
English Meaning
Those have truly lost who killed their children foolishly and without knowledge and declared forbidden what Allah had provided for them, falsely attributing it to Allah. They had gone far astray and were not rightly guided.
Urdu Meaning
یقیناً وہ لوگ خسارے میں رہے جنہوں نے نادانی اور بے عقلی سے اپنی اولاد کو قتل کیا اور اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھ کر اس کے دیے ہوئے رزق کو حرام قرار دیا۔ وہ گمراہ ہوگئے اور ہدایت یافتہ نہ تھے۔
Explanation
The passage concludes with a strong condemnation of two serious wrongs: harming innocent children and inventing religious prohibitions without divine authority.
