About Surah Al-An'am
Surah Al-An'am is the sixth chapter of the Qur'an and contains 165 Ayahs. It is a Makki Surah that strongly emphasizes the Oneness of Allah, His power over creation, the truth of revelation, and accountability before Him. The Surah challenges the beliefs of those who associate partners with Allah and reminds people to recognize His signs in the heavens, the earth, and within their own lives. It also discusses Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, the Prophets, lawful and unlawful matters, and false customs concerning cattle.

بَدِيعُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُۥ وَلَدٌۭ وَلَمْ تَكُن لَّهُۥ صَٰحِبَةٌۭ ۖ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍۢ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
English Meaning
He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a child when He has no spouse? He created everything and has complete knowledge of all things.
Urdu Meaning
وہ آسمانوں اور زمین کا بے مثال پیدا کرنے والا ہے۔ اس کی اولاد کیسے ہوسکتی ہے جبکہ اس کی کوئی بیوی نہیں؟ اس نے ہر چیز کو پیدا کیا ہے اور وہ ہر چیز کو خوب جانتا ہے۔
Explanation
Allah is the Creator of everything and is completely unlike His creation. Therefore, attributing children or family relationships to Him is incompatible with His unique nature.
ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ خَٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَكِيلٌۭ
English Meaning
That is Allah, your Lord. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He is the Creator of everything, so worship Him alone. He is the Guardian and Disposer of all affairs.
Urdu Meaning
یہی اللہ تمہارا رب ہے، اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں۔ وہ ہر چیز کا خالق ہے، پس اسی کی عبادت کرو۔ اور وہ ہر چیز پر نگہبان اور کارساز ہے۔
Explanation
The verse clearly connects Allah's role as the Creator with the right to be worshipped alone. Since everything depends upon Him, worship belongs exclusively to Him.
لَّا تُدْرِكُهُ ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ وَهُوَ يُدْرِكُ ٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱللَّطِيفُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ
English Meaning
No vision can encompass Him, while He encompasses all vision. He is Most Subtle and All-Aware.
Urdu Meaning
نگاہیں اسے پا نہیں سکتیں، جبکہ وہ تمام نگاہوں کو پا لیتا ہے۔ اور وہ نہایت لطیف اور ہر چیز سے باخبر ہے۔
Explanation
Allah's knowledge and awareness encompass everything, while human perception is limited. The verse reminds us that Allah's nature is beyond the limitations of creation.
قَدْ جَآءَكُم بَصَآئِرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَنْ أَبْصَرَ فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِيَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ عَلَيْكُم بِحَفِيظٍۢ
English Meaning
Clear insights have come to you from your Lord. Whoever chooses to recognize the truth benefits himself, and whoever turns away harms himself. I am not appointed as a keeper over you.
Urdu Meaning
تمہارے رب کی طرف سے تمہارے پاس بصیرت کی نشانیاں آچکی ہیں۔ جو شخص حق کو دیکھتا اور سمجھتا ہے، اس کا فائدہ اسی کو ہے، اور جو اندھا بن جاتا ہے اس کا نقصان بھی اسی کو ہے۔ اور میں تم پر نگہبان مقرر نہیں کیا گیا۔
Explanation
Allah has provided guidance and clear signs, but each person is responsible for how they respond to them. The Prophet ﷺ was responsible for conveying the message, not forcing people to believe.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ وَلِيَقُولُواْ دَرَسْتَ وَلِنُبَيِّنَهُۥ لِقَوْمٍۢ يَعْلَمُونَ
English Meaning
In this way We explain the signs in different forms, so that they may say, “You have studied this,” while We make the truth clear for people who possess knowledge.
Urdu Meaning
اسی طرح ہم اپنی آیات کو مختلف انداز میں بیان کرتے ہیں تاکہ وہ کہیں کہ آپ نے یہ سب کہیں سے پڑھا ہے، جبکہ ہم اسے ان لوگوں کے لیے واضح کرتے ہیں جو علم رکھتے ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah presents His signs and teachings in different ways so that thoughtful people can understand them. Some may still reject the message despite its clarity.
ٱتَّبِعْ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
English Meaning
Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him, and turn away from the arguments of those who associate partners with Him.
Urdu Meaning
جو کچھ آپ کے رب کی طرف سے آپ پر وحی کی گئی ہے اس کی پیروی کریں۔ اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، اور مشرکین کی مخالفت اور باطل رویوں سے الگ رہیں۔
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to remain firmly committed to revelation and Tawheed. The message should not be abandoned because of the rejection of those who oppose it.
وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَآ أَشْرَكُواْ ۗ وَمَا جَعَلْنَٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِوَكِيلٍۢ
English Meaning
Had Allah willed, they would not have associated partners with Him. We have not appointed you as their keeper, nor are you responsible for controlling them.
Urdu Meaning
اگر اللہ چاہتا تو وہ شرک نہ کرتے۔ اور ہم نے آپ کو ان پر نگہبان نہیں بنایا، نہ آپ ان کے ذمہ دار مقرر کیے گئے ہیں۔
Explanation
The verse reminds the Prophet ﷺ that he is not responsible for controlling people's choices. His responsibility is to convey Allah's message clearly.
وَلَا تَسُبُّواْ ٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَسُبُّواْ ٱللَّهَ عَدْوًۢا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۢ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ زَيَّنَّا لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ عَمَلَهُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِم مَّرْجِعُهُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ
English Meaning
Do not insult those they invoke besides Allah, lest they respond by insulting Allah out of hostility and ignorance. We have allowed every community to view its actions according to its ways; then all will return to their Lord, who will inform them of what they used to do.
Urdu Meaning
اور جنہیں وہ اللہ کے سوا پکارتے ہیں انہیں برا نہ کہو، ورنہ وہ جہالت کی وجہ سے حد سے بڑھ کر اللہ کو برا کہنے لگیں گے۔ اسی طرح ہم نے ہر قوم کے اعمال کو ان کے لیے خوشنما بنا دیا ہے، پھر سب کو اپنے رب کی طرف لوٹنا ہے اور وہ انہیں ان کے اعمال سے آگاہ کرے گا۔
Explanation
This verse teaches believers not to respond to false beliefs with unnecessary insults that could lead to greater disrespect and hostility. It establishes an important principle of responsible speech and respectful conduct.
وَأَقْسَمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ لَئِن جَآءَتْهُمْ ءَايَةٌۭ لَّيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَا ۗ قُلْ إِنَّمَا ٱلْءَايَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَا يُشْعِرُكُمْ أَنَّهَآ إِذَا جَآءَتْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
English Meaning
They swore their strongest oaths by Allah that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe. Say, “The signs are with Allah.” Yet how do you know that even if such a sign came, they would believe?
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے اللہ کی سخت قسمیں کھا کر کہا کہ اگر ان کے پاس کوئی نشانی آجائے تو وہ ضرور ایمان لے آئیں گے۔ کہہ دیجیے کہ نشانیاں اللہ کے اختیار میں ہیں۔ اور تمہیں کیا معلوم کہ نشانی آجانے کے بعد بھی وہ ایمان نہ لائیں؟
Explanation
Some people demanded extraordinary signs while their real problem was unwillingness to accept the truth. The verse reminds us that signs are under Allah's wisdom and authority.
وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفْـِٔدَتَهُمْ وَأَبْصَٰرَهُمْ كَمَا لَمْ يُؤْمِنُواْ بِهِۦٓ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۢ وَنَذَرُهُمْ فِى طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
English Meaning
We turn their hearts and eyes away because they refused to believe in it the first time, and We leave them wandering blindly in their transgression.
Urdu Meaning
اور ہم ان کے دلوں اور نگاہوں کو اسی طرح پھیر دیں گے جیسے وہ پہلی مرتبہ اس پر ایمان نہیں لائے تھے، اور ہم انہیں ان کی سرکشی میں بھٹکنے کے لیے چھوڑ دیں گے۔
Explanation
Persistent rejection can lead a person further away from recognizing truth. The verse warns against repeatedly refusing guidance after it becomes clear.
وَلَوْ أَنَّنَا نَزَّلْنَآ إِلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ وَكَلَّمَهُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَحَشَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ كُلَّ شَىْءٍۢ قُبُلًا مَّا كَانُواْ لِيُؤْمِنُوٓاْ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يَجْهَلُونَ
English Meaning
Even if We sent angels to them, the dead spoke to them, and We brought every possible sign before them, they would still not believe unless Allah willed. But most of them do not understand.
Urdu Meaning
اگر ہم ان کی طرف فرشتے بھی اتار دیتے، مردے ان سے بات کرتے اور ہر چیز ان کے سامنے جمع کردی جاتی، تب بھی وہ ایمان نہ لاتے مگر یہ کہ اللہ چاہتا۔ لیکن ان میں سے اکثر لوگ حقیقت کو نہیں سمجھتے۔
Explanation
The verse emphasizes that stubborn rejection cannot always be solved by producing more signs. True guidance requires a sincere heart that is willing to accept the truth.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِىٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَٰطِينَ ٱلْإِنسِ وَٱلْجِنِّ يُوحِى بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ زُخْرُفَ ٱلْقَوْلِ غُرُورًا ۚ وَلَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ مَا فَعَلُوهُ ۖ فَذَرْهُمْ وَمَا يَفْتَرُونَ
English Meaning
In this way We appointed for every Prophet enemies from among humans and jinn, who inspire one another with attractive but deceptive words. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done this. So leave them with what they invent.
Urdu Meaning
اسی طرح ہم نے ہر نبی کے لیے انسانوں اور جنات میں سے دشمن بنائے، جو ایک دوسرے کو دھوکے کے لیے خوشنما باتیں سکھاتے ہیں۔ اگر تمہارا رب چاہتا تو وہ ایسا نہ کرتے۔ پس انہیں ان کی گھڑی ہوئی باتوں کے ساتھ چھوڑ دیں۔
Explanation
Falsehood can sometimes be presented in attractive language. The verse warns believers to look beyond appealing words and judge claims according to revelation and truth.
وَلِتَصْغَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَفْـِٔدَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَلِيَرْضَوْهُ وَلِيَقْتَرِفُواْ مَا هُم مُّقْتَرِفُونَ
English Meaning
So that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward such deceptive words, become pleased with them, and continue committing what they commit.
Urdu Meaning
اور تاکہ ان لوگوں کے دل ان باتوں کی طرف مائل ہوں جو آخرت پر ایمان نہیں رکھتے، وہ ان سے خوش ہوجائیں اور وہ اعمال کرتے رہیں جو وہ کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
A person's beliefs and desires can influence what kind of speech they accept. Rejection of accountability can make falsehood and wrongdoing appear acceptable.
أَفَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبْتَغِى حَكَمًا وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ إِلَيْكُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مُفَصَّلًا ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُۥ مُنَزَّلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُمْتَرِينَ
English Meaning
Should I seek anyone other than Allah as a judge, when He is the One who has revealed this Book clearly explained? Those who were given Scripture know that it has been revealed from your Lord in truth, so do not be among those who doubt.
Urdu Meaning
کیا میں اللہ کے سوا کسی اور کو فیصلہ کرنے والا تلاش کروں، حالانکہ اسی نے تمہاری طرف واضح کتاب نازل کی ہے؟ جن لوگوں کو کتاب دی گئی وہ جانتے ہیں کہ یہ تمہارے رب کی طرف سے حق کے ساتھ نازل ہوئی ہے۔ پس شک کرنے والوں میں شامل نہ ہوں۔
Explanation
Allah is presented as the ultimate source of judgment and guidance. The Qur'an is described as a revealed Book that clarifies the truth.
وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلًا ۚ لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
English Meaning
The word of your Lord has been perfected in truth and justice. Nothing can change His words. He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Urdu Meaning
اور تمہارے رب کی بات سچائی اور انصاف کے اعتبار سے کامل ہے۔ اس کی باتوں کو کوئی بدلنے والا نہیں۔ اور وہ خوب سننے والا، سب کچھ جاننے والا ہے۔
Explanation
Allah's words are characterized by truth and justice. Nothing can undermine His authority or alter His ultimate decree.
وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ
English Meaning
If you follow most people on earth, they may lead you away from Allah's path. They follow assumptions and make unsupported claims.
Urdu Meaning
اگر آپ زمین میں موجود اکثر لوگوں کی پیروی کریں گے تو وہ آپ کو اللہ کے راستے سے بھٹکا دیں گے۔ وہ صرف گمان کی پیروی کرتے اور اندازے سے باتیں بناتے ہیں۔
Explanation
The verse teaches that truth is not determined simply by majority opinion. Believers should evaluate beliefs according to revelation, evidence, and truth rather than popularity.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ مَن يَضِلُّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ ۖ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
English Meaning
Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is rightly guided.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک تمہارا رب ہی خوب جانتا ہے کہ کون اس کے راستے سے بھٹکا ہوا ہے، اور وہی ہدایت یافتہ لوگوں کو بھی سب سے زیادہ جانتا ہے۔
Explanation
Allah has complete knowledge of people's guidance and misguidance. Human beings should therefore remain humble and avoid assuming that they know everything about another person's heart.
فَكُلُواْ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسْمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُم بِـَٔايَٰتِهِۦ مُؤْمِنِينَ
English Meaning
So eat from that over which Allah's name has been mentioned, if you truly believe in His signs.
Urdu Meaning
پس جس جانور پر اللہ کا نام لیا گیا ہو اس میں سے کھاؤ، اگر تم اس کی آیات پر ایمان رکھتے ہو۔
Explanation
This verse connects lawful food with obedience to Allah and respect for His commands. It encourages believers to follow the guidance given regarding what they consume.
وَمَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تَأْكُلُواْ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسْمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُم مَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا مَا ٱضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ ۗ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا لَّيُضِلُّونَ بِأَهْوَآئِهِم بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ
English Meaning
Why should you not eat from that over which Allah's name has been mentioned, when He has already explained what He has forbidden to you, except in a situation of genuine necessity? Many people mislead others through their desires without knowledge. Your Lord knows best those who transgress.
Urdu Meaning
اور تمہیں کیا ہوا کہ جس جانور پر اللہ کا نام لیا گیا ہو اسے نہ کھاؤ، حالانکہ اللہ نے تم پر حرام چیزیں واضح کردی ہیں، سوائے اس حالت کے جب تم واقعی مجبور ہوجاؤ۔ بہت سے لوگ بغیر علم کے اپنی خواہشات کے ذریعے دوسروں کو گمراہ کرتے ہیں۔ بے شک تمہارا رب حد سے بڑھنے والوں کو خوب جانتا ہے۔
Explanation
Allah provides clear guidance concerning lawful and unlawful food while recognizing genuine necessity. The verse also warns against making religious judgments based merely on personal desires.
وَذَرُواْ ظَٰهِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَبَاطِنَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَكْسِبُونَ ٱلْإِثْمَ سَيُجْزَوْنَ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَقْتَرِفُونَ
English Meaning
Avoid both the outward and inward forms of sin. Surely, those who commit sin will be recompensed for what they used to do.
Urdu Meaning
اور ظاہر اور پوشیدہ دونوں طرح کے گناہ چھوڑ دو۔ بے شک جو لوگ گناہ کماتے ہیں انہیں ان کے کیے ہوئے اعمال کا بدلہ دیا جائے گا۔
Explanation
Islam calls believers to avoid sin not only in visible actions but also in hidden wrongdoing. Allah knows both what people do openly and what they conceal.
