About Surah Al-An'am
Surah Al-An'am is the sixth chapter of the Qur'an and contains 165 Ayahs. It is a Makki Surah that strongly emphasizes the Oneness of Allah, His power over creation, the truth of revelation, and accountability before Him. The Surah challenges the beliefs of those who associate partners with Allah and reminds people to recognize His signs in the heavens, the earth, and within their own lives. It also discusses Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, the Prophets, lawful and unlawful matters, and false customs concerning cattle.

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦٓ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ٢١
English Meaning
Who could be more unjust than one who invents lies about Allah or denies His signs? Surely, the wrongdoers will never succeed.
Urdu Meaning
اور اس شخص سے بڑھ کر ظالم کون ہے جو اللہ پر جھوٹ باندھے یا اس کی نشانیوں کو جھٹلائے؟ بے شک ظالم لوگ کامیاب نہیں ہوتے۔
Explanation
Allah warns against two serious forms of wrongdoing: attributing false things to Him and rejecting His signs. Such rejection ultimately leads to loss rather than true success.
وَيَوْمَ نَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوٓا۟ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآؤُكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ ٢٢
English Meaning
On the Day We gather them all together, We will ask those who associated partners with Allah, “Where are those partners you used to claim?”
Urdu Meaning
اور جس دن ہم سب کو جمع کریں گے، پھر مشرکوں سے کہیں گے: کہاں ہیں تمہارے وہ شریک جن کا تم دعویٰ کیا کرتے تھے؟
Explanation
On the Day of Judgment, those who associated partners with Allah will be confronted with the reality of their beliefs. The things they relied upon besides Allah will provide them no benefit.
ثُمَّ لَمْ تَكُن فِتْنَتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ وَٱللَّهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ ٢٣
English Meaning
Then their only response will be to say, “By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists.”
Urdu Meaning
پھر ان کے پاس اس کے سوا کوئی جواب نہ ہوگا کہ وہ کہیں گے: اللہ کی قسم، ہمارے رب! ہم مشرک نہیں تھے۔
Explanation
The verse describes how some people will even deny their previous association of partners with Allah when faced with the reality of the Hereafter.
ٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ ٢٤
English Meaning
See how they will lie against themselves, while the false claims they invented will completely fail them.
Urdu Meaning
دیکھو، وہ اپنے ہی خلاف کیسے جھوٹ بولیں گے، اور جو کچھ وہ گھڑا کرتے تھے وہ سب ان سے گم ہو جائے گا۔
Explanation
Their own denial will not protect them. The false beliefs and claims they depended upon will disappear, leaving them with no support.
وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًۭا ۚ وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍۢ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءُوكَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ٢٥
English Meaning
Some of them listen to you, but they do not truly understand. Even if they were to see every sign, they would still not believe. When they come to argue with you, they say, “This is nothing but ancient tales.”
Urdu Meaning
ان میں کچھ لوگ آپ کی بات سنتے ہیں، مگر اسے سمجھنے کے لیے ان کے دل پردوں میں ہیں اور ان کے کانوں میں بوجھ ہے۔ وہ ہر نشانی دیکھ لیں تب بھی ایمان نہیں لائیں گے، اور بحث کرتے ہوئے کہیں گے کہ یہ تو پہلے لوگوں کے قصے ہیں۔
Explanation
Simply hearing revelation does not guarantee guidance. A person who approaches the truth with stubborn rejection may hear the message but refuse to understand or accept it.
وَهُمْ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ وَيَنْـَٔوْنَ عَنْهُ ۖ وَإِن يُهْلِكُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ٢٦
English Meaning
They prevent others from following it and keep themselves away from it, but they only ruin themselves without realizing it.
Urdu Meaning
اور وہ خود بھی اس سے روکتے ہیں اور خود بھی اس سے دور رہتے ہیں، لیکن وہ اپنے ہی آپ کو ہلاک کرتے ہیں اور انہیں اس کا احساس نہیں۔
Explanation
Rejecting guidance is harmful not only when someone personally turns away, but also when they prevent others from benefiting from it.
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰلَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٢٧
English Meaning
If only you could see them when they are brought before the Fire. They will say, “If only we could return, we would not deny the signs of our Lord and would become believers.”
Urdu Meaning
اور اگر تم انہیں اس وقت دیکھو جب انہیں آگ کے سامنے کھڑا کیا جائے گا، تو وہ کہیں گے: کاش ہمیں واپس بھیج دیا جائے، پھر ہم اپنے رب کی نشانیوں کو نہ جھٹلائیں اور ایمان والوں میں شامل ہو جائیں۔
Explanation
The verse describes the regret of those who recognize the truth only after facing the consequences of rejection. At that moment, they will wish for another opportunity.
بَلْ بَدَا لَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُخْفُونَ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلَوْ رُدُّوا۟ لَعَادُوا۟ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ٢٨
English Meaning
Rather, what they used to conceal will become clear to them. Even if they were returned, they would go back to what they had been forbidden from, and they would still be lying.
Urdu Meaning
بلکہ جو کچھ وہ پہلے چھپاتے تھے وہ ان پر ظاہر ہو جائے گا۔ اور اگر انہیں واپس بھیج دیا جائے تو وہ پھر انہی کاموں کی طرف لوٹ جائیں گے جن سے انہیں روکا گیا تھا، اور بے شک وہ جھوٹے ہیں۔
Explanation
Their regret would not necessarily mean genuine transformation. The verse exposes the difference between temporary regret after seeing punishment and sincere repentance while one still has the opportunity.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ ٢٩
English Meaning
They used to say, “There is only this worldly life, and we will never be resurrected.”
Urdu Meaning
اور وہ کہا کرتے تھے کہ ہماری زندگی تو صرف دنیا کی زندگی ہے اور ہمیں دوبارہ اٹھایا نہیں جائے گا۔
Explanation
The verse identifies denial of resurrection as a major reason for rejecting accountability. Belief in the Hereafter changes how a person understands responsibility and the purpose of life.
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ ۚ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ هَـٰذَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَا ۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ ٣٠
English Meaning
If only you could see when they are brought before their Lord. He will ask, “Is this not the truth?” They will say, “Yes, by our Lord.” He will say, “Then taste the punishment because of your rejection.”
Urdu Meaning
اور اگر تم انہیں اس وقت دیکھو جب وہ اپنے رب کے سامنے کھڑے کیے جائیں گے۔ اللہ فرمائے گا: کیا یہ حق نہیں؟ وہ کہیں گے: کیوں نہیں، ہمارے رب کی قسم! اللہ فرمائے گا: پھر اپنے کفر کے سبب عذاب کا مزہ چکھو۔
Explanation
On that Day, the reality they denied will become undeniable. Their own acknowledgment will confirm what they rejected during worldly life.
قَدْ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَآءِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰحَسْرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِيهَا وَهُمْ يَحْمِلُونَ أَوْزَارَهُمْ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِمْ ۚ أَلَا سَآءَ مَا يَزِرُونَ ٣١
English Meaning
Those who deny meeting Allah are truly at loss. When the Hour suddenly comes, they will say, “How regretful we are for what we neglected!” They will carry their burdens upon their backs. How terrible are the burdens they carry.
Urdu Meaning
یقیناً وہ لوگ خسارے میں رہے جنہوں نے اللہ سے ملاقات کو جھٹلایا۔ یہاں تک کہ جب قیامت اچانک ان پر آ جائے گی تو کہیں گے: ہائے افسوس! ہم نے اس معاملے میں کتنی کوتاہی کی۔ اور وہ اپنے گناہوں کا بوجھ اپنی پشتوں پر اٹھائے ہوں گے۔ سن لو! یہ بہت برا بوجھ ہے۔
Explanation
The verse portrays the deep regret of those who neglected their responsibility toward Allah. The imagery of carrying burdens emphasizes the consequences of one's deeds.
وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا لَعِبٌۭ وَلَهْوٌۭ ۖ وَلَلدَّارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ ٣٢
English Meaning
The life of this world is only temporary amusement and distraction, while the Hereafter is better for those who have Taqwa. Will you not then understand?
Urdu Meaning
اور دنیا کی زندگی تو کھیل اور دل بہلانے کے سوا کچھ نہیں، جبکہ آخرت کا گھر ان لوگوں کے لیے بہتر ہے جو تقویٰ اختیار کرتے ہیں۔ کیا تم عقل سے کام نہیں لیتے؟
Explanation
The verse does not mean that every worldly responsibility is meaningless. Rather, it reminds us that worldly life is temporary compared with the lasting Hereafter.
قَدْ نَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُۥ لَيَحْزُنُكَ ٱلَّذِى يَقُولُونَ ۖ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ ٣٣
English Meaning
We certainly know that what they say causes you grief. They are not really accusing you of falsehood; rather, the wrongdoers reject Allah’s signs.
Urdu Meaning
ہم جانتے ہیں کہ جو کچھ وہ کہتے ہیں وہ آپ کو غمگین کرتا ہے۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ وہ آپ کو جھوٹا نہیں کہتے، بلکہ ظالم لوگ اللہ کی آیات کا انکار کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah comforts the Prophet ﷺ by making clear that the rejection of his message was ultimately a rejection of Allah's signs. This reminds the Messenger that the responsibility is to convey the truth faithfully.
وَلَقَدْ كُذِّبَتْ رُسُلٌۭ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَصَبَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا كُذِّبُوا۟ وَأُوذُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰهُمْ نَصْرُنَا ۚ وَلَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَكَ مِن نَّبَإِى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ ٣٤
English Meaning
Messengers before you were also rejected and harmed, but they remained patient until Our help came to them. There is no one who can change Allah’s words. You have already received news about the messengers before you.
Urdu Meaning
اور آپ سے پہلے بھی رسول جھٹلائے گئے اور انہیں تکلیفیں دی گئیں، پھر انہوں نے صبر کیا یہاں تک کہ ہماری مدد ان کے پاس آ گئی۔ اللہ کی باتوں کو کوئی بدلنے والا نہیں، اور آپ کے پاس پہلے رسولوں کی خبریں آ چکی ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah reminds the Prophet ﷺ that earlier messengers also faced rejection and hardship. Their patience provides an example of remaining firm until Allah's help arrives.
وَإِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكَ إِعْرَاضُهُمْ فَإِنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتَ أَن تَبْتَغِىَ نَفَقًۭا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَوْ سُلَّمًۭا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَأْتِيَهُم بِـَٔايَةٍۢ ۚ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَمَعَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ ۚ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ ٣٥
English Meaning
If their rejection is difficult for you, then even if you could seek a tunnel through the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them another sign, it would not change the matter. Had Allah willed, He could have gathered them all upon guidance. So do not be among those who act without understanding.
Urdu Meaning
اور اگر ان کا منہ پھیرنا آپ پر بہت گراں ہے تو اگر آپ زمین میں کوئی سرنگ بنا کر یا آسمان میں کوئی سیڑھی لگا کر ان کے پاس کوئی نشانی لے آئیں، تب بھی معاملہ بدلنے والا نہیں۔ اگر اللہ چاہتا تو سب کو ہدایت پر جمع کر دیتا۔ پس آپ نادانوں میں شامل نہ ہوں۔
Explanation
The verse teaches that guidance cannot be forced through increasingly extraordinary signs. The Prophet ﷺ is reminded to remain patient and trust Allah's wisdom regarding people's response.
إِنَّمَا يَسْتَجِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْمَعُونَ ۘ وَٱلْمَوْتَىٰ يَبْعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُونَ ٣٦
English Meaning
Only those who truly listen will respond. As for the dead, Allah will resurrect them, and then they will be returned to Him.
Urdu Meaning
بات کو وہی لوگ قبول کرتے ہیں جو دل سے سنتے ہیں۔ اور مردوں کو اللہ اٹھائے گا، پھر سب اسی کی طرف لوٹائے جائیں گے۔
Explanation
The verse distinguishes between physically hearing a message and listening to it with a receptive heart. True response requires willingness to accept guidance.
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَةٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَادِرٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُنَزِّلَ ءَايَةًۭ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٧
English Meaning
They say, “Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?” Say, “Allah is certainly able to send a sign, but most of them do not understand.”
Urdu Meaning
اور وہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس پر اس کے رب کی طرف سے کوئی نشانی کیوں نہیں اتاری گئی؟ کہہ دیجیے کہ اللہ نشانی اتارنے پر پوری قدرت رکھتا ہے، لیکن ان میں سے اکثر سمجھتے نہیں۔
Explanation
Allah has complete power to provide signs, but the demand for signs does not necessarily reflect genuine faith. True understanding involves accepting Allah's wisdom and guidance.
وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍۢ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَـٰٓئِرٍۢ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّآ أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم ۚ مَّا فَرَّطْنَا فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يُحْشَرُونَ ٣٨
English Meaning
There is no creature on earth nor bird flying with its wings except that they are communities like you. Nothing has been overlooked in the Book, and then they will all be gathered to their Lord.
Urdu Meaning
زمین میں چلنے والا کوئی جانور اور اپنے پروں سے اڑنے والا کوئی پرندہ ایسا نہیں مگر وہ بھی تمہاری طرح ایک امت ہیں۔ ہم نے کتاب میں کسی چیز کو نظر انداز نہیں کیا، پھر سب اپنے رب کی طرف جمع کیے جائیں گے۔
Explanation
This verse draws attention to the organized communities found throughout creation. It reminds human beings that Allah's knowledge encompasses all creatures and that everything ultimately belongs to Him.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا صُمٌّۭ وَبُكْمٌۭ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ ۗ مَن يَشَإِ ٱللَّهُ يُضْلِلْهُ وَمَن يَشَأْ يَجْعَلْهُۥ عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ ٣٩
English Meaning
Those who deny Our signs are like the deaf and mute in darkness. Allah leaves astray whom He wills, and whom He wills He places upon a straight path.
Urdu Meaning
اور جن لوگوں نے ہماری آیات کو جھٹلایا وہ اندھیروں میں بہرے اور گونگے جیسے ہیں۔ اللہ جسے چاہتا ہے گمراہی میں چھوڑ دیتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے سیدھے راستے پر قائم کر دیتا ہے۔
Explanation
The description of deafness and muteness refers to people who refuse to hear and speak the truth despite having the ability to do so. Guidance is ultimately from Allah, while people are responsible for how they respond to the truth.
قُلْ أَرَءَيْتَكُمْ إِنْ أَتَىٰكُمْ عَذَابُ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ أَتَتْكُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ تَدْعُونَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ ٤٠
English Meaning
Say, “Consider this: if Allah's punishment came to you or the Hour arrived, would you call upon anyone other than Allah, if you are truthful?”
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے کہ اگر تم پر اللہ کا عذاب آ جائے یا قیامت قائم ہو جائے تو کیا تم اللہ کے سوا کسی اور کو پکارو گے؟ اگر تم سچے ہو تو بتاؤ۔
Explanation
The verse challenges the claim of those who associate partners with Allah. In a moment of extreme need, the reality of human dependence becomes clear, reminding us that Allah alone has ultimate power.
