In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Ayah 141

English Meaning

Those who wait to see what happens to you—if you receive victory from Allah, they say, “Were we not with you?” But if the disbelievers gain an advantage, they say, “Did we not support you and protect you from the believers?” Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will never grant the disbelievers a way to prevail over the believers.

Explanation

This verse describes the behavior of hypocrites who try to benefit from whichever side appears successful. Allah reminds believers that the final judgment belongs to Him.

Ayah 142

English Meaning

Indeed, the hypocrites try to deceive Allah, but Allah exposes their deception. When they stand for Prayer, they do so lazily, seeking to be seen by people, and they remember Allah only a little.

Explanation

The verse describes hypocrisy in worship: performing acts outwardly while lacking sincere devotion to Allah.

Ayah 143

English Meaning

They waver between the two sides, belonging neither fully to these nor to those. Whoever Allah allows to go astray will find no path to guidance.

Explanation

Hypocrisy creates spiritual instability. A person who refuses to sincerely commit to truth remains caught between conflicting directions.

Ayah 144

English Meaning

Believers, do not take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Would you give Allah clear evidence against yourselves?

Explanation

The verse warns believers against abandoning the loyalty and solidarity of the believing community in favor of those opposed to it. Its context concerns allegiance and religious-political loyalty, not ordinary kindness or peaceful dealings.

Ayah 145

English Meaning

Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire, and you will never find a helper for them.

Explanation

The verse gives a severe warning about deliberate hypocrisy because it combines outward claims of faith with concealed rejection and betrayal.

Ayah 146

English Meaning

Except those who repent, correct their conduct, hold firmly to Allah, and sincerely devote their religion to Him. Such people will be with the believers, and Allah will give the believers a great reward.

Explanation

Even after the warning about hypocrisy, the door of repentance remains open. Genuine repentance must be accompanied by reform, sincerity, and holding firmly to Allah.

Ayah 147

English Meaning

Why would Allah punish you if you are grateful and believe? Allah is Appreciative and All-Knowing.

Explanation

This verse highlights Allah’s mercy. Gratitude and genuine faith are beloved qualities, and Allah knows the sincerity behind them.

Ayah 148

English Meaning

Allah does not like evil speech to be made public, except by someone who has been wronged. Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

Explanation

Islam discourages publicly spreading insults, accusations, and harmful speech. A person who has genuinely been wronged may speak about the injustice in seeking help or justice.

Ayah 149

English Meaning

Whether you openly or privately do good, or forgive an evil done to you, Allah is Ever-Pardoning and All-Powerful.

Explanation

Allah praises good actions and forgiveness. A person can do good publicly or privately, and forgiving others is a noble quality.

Ayah 150

English Meaning

Those who reject Allah and His messengers and try to separate Allah from His messengers, saying, “We believe in some and reject others,” seeking a path between them—

Explanation

The verse rejects selective faith in which a person accepts some messengers while deliberately rejecting others whom Allah sent.

Ayah 151

English Meaning

Those are truly disbelievers, and We have prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

Explanation

This verse completes the warning against deliberately accepting some revealed messengers while rejecting others.

Ayah 152

English Meaning

Those who believe in Allah and all His messengers and do not distinguish between them in faith will be given their rewards. Allah is Ever-Forgiving and Most Merciful.

Explanation

True believers accept the chain of revelation and believe in all prophets sent by Allah, while recognizing the final Messenger ﷺ.

Ayah 153

English Meaning

The People of the Book ask you to bring down a scripture from heaven. They had asked Musa for something even greater, saying, “Show us Allah openly,” and they were struck by the thunderbolt because of their wrongdoing. Then, after clear signs came to them, they took the calf as an object of worship. Yet Allah pardoned them and gave Musa clear authority.

Explanation

The verse recalls how previous communities sometimes demanded extraordinary signs despite already receiving clear evidence. It also reminds us of Allah’s forgiveness toward those who repent.

Ayah 154

English Meaning

We raised the mountain above them because of their covenant and commanded them to enter the gate humbly. We also instructed them not to violate the Sabbath, and We took from them a solemn covenant.

Explanation

This verse recalls several commands and the serious covenant taken from the Children of Israel. It emphasizes the importance of honoring Allah’s commands.

Ayah 155

English Meaning

Because they broke their covenant, rejected Allah’s signs, killed prophets unjustly, and claimed that their hearts were closed, Allah describes their hearts as sealed because of their persistent disbelief. Therefore, only a few of them believed.

Explanation

The verse lists serious acts of rejection and disobedience committed by some among the Children of Israel. The Qur'an presents these as consequences of persistent wrongdoing, not as a condemnation of every individual from that community.

Ayah 156

English Meaning

And because of their disbelief and their grave false accusation against Maryam.

Explanation

Ayah 157

English Meaning

And because they claimed, “We killed the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam, the Messenger of Allah.” But they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, though it was made to appear so to them. Those who differ about this are in doubt and have no certain knowledge, following speculation. They certainly did not kill him.

Explanation

This verse presents the Qur’anic account concerning Prophet Isa عليه السلام and rejects the claim that he was killed by his enemies. It emphasizes certainty over speculation.

Ayah 158

English Meaning

Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. Allah is Almighty and All-Wise.

Explanation

The verse states that Allah raised Isa عليه السلام to Himself, demonstrating Allah’s power and wisdom.

Ayah 159

English Meaning

There is none among the People of the Book except that they will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.

Explanation

This verse is understood by scholars in different ways regarding the pronouns and the timing referred to. Its clear emphasis is that Isa عليه السلام has a significant role connected with the testimony and accountability of the People of the Book.

Ayah 160

English Meaning

Because of wrongdoing by some among those who followed Judaism, We prohibited for them certain good things that had previously been lawful for them, and because they turned many people away from the way of Allah.

Explanation

The verse describes consequences connected to wrongdoing and turning people away from Allah’s path. It refers to specific wrongdoing rather than treating every individual from the community as identical.
