About Surah Al-Ma'idah
Surah Al-Ma'idah is the fifth chapter of the Qur'an and contains 120 Ayahs. It is a Madani Surah that focuses on fulfilling covenants, obeying Allah's commands, justice, lawful and unlawful matters, purification, and responsibility before Allah. It also discusses the People of the Book, the covenant of the Children of Israel, and the mission of Prophet Isa عليه السلام. The Surah teaches believers to remain faithful to Allah's guidance and to uphold justice, righteousness, and obedience in every aspect of life.

وَإِذَا جَآءُوكُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَقَد دَّخَلُوا۟ بِٱلْكُفْرِ وَهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْتُمُونَ ﴿٦١﴾
English Meaning
When some people came to the believers, they claimed to have faith, even though they entered with disbelief and departed with it. Allah knows best what they concealed within themselves.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب وہ تمہارے پاس آتے ہیں تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم ایمان لائے، حالانکہ وہ کفر کے ساتھ داخل ہوئے اور اسی کے ساتھ واپس گئے۔ اور اللہ خوب جانتا ہے جو کچھ وہ اپنے دلوں میں چھپاتے ہیں۔
Explanation
Allah knows the reality of people's hearts even when their outward words appear different.
وَتَرَىٰ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنْهُمْ يُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ وَأَكْلِهِمُ ٱلسُّحْتَ ۚ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾
English Meaning
You will see many of them rushing toward sin, wrongdoing, and consuming unlawful wealth. How evil are the deeds they practice.
Urdu Meaning
اور تم ان میں سے بہت سے لوگوں کو گناہ، زیادتی اور حرام مال کھانے میں جلدی کرتے دیکھو گے۔ یقیناً وہ بہت برے کام کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
The verse condemns repeatedly choosing sin and benefiting from unlawful wealth.
لَوْلَا يَنْهَىٰهُمُ ٱلرَّبَّـٰنِيُّونَ وَٱلْأَحْبَارُ عَن قَوْلِهِمُ ٱلْإِثْمَ وَأَكْلِهِمُ ٱلسُّحْتَ ۚ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَصْنَعُونَ ﴿٦٣﴾
English Meaning
Why did their religious scholars and learned people not prevent them from sinful speech and consuming unlawful wealth? Their failure to discourage such wrongdoing was itself a serious evil.
Urdu Meaning
ان کے علماء اور اہلِ علم انہیں گناہ کی باتیں کرنے اور حرام مال کھانے سے کیوں نہیں روکتے تھے؟ جو کچھ وہ کرتے تھے وہ بہت برا تھا۔
Explanation
Those with religious knowledge have a responsibility to discourage clear wrongdoing with wisdom and sincerity.
وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ يَدُ ٱللَّهِ مَغْلُولَةٌ ۚ غُلَّتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَلُعِنُوا۟ بِمَا قَالُوا۟ ۘ بَلْ يَدَاهُ مَبْسُوطَتَانِ يُنفِقُ كَيْفَ يَشَآءُ ۚ وَلَيَزِيدَنَّ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنْهُم مَّآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ طُغْيَـٰنًۭا وَكُفْرًۭا ۚ وَأَلْقَيْنَا بَيْنَهُمُ ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ كُلَّمَآ أَوْقَدُوا۟ نَارًۭا لِّلْحَرْبِ أَطْفَأَهَا ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَيَسْعَوْنَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَسَادًۭا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ ﴿٦٤﴾
English Meaning
Some among the Children of Israel made a statement about Allah's giving, claiming that His hand was restrained. Allah rejects this claim and declares that He gives generously according to His wisdom. The verse also warns against spreading hostility and corruption.
Urdu Meaning
ان میں سے بعض نے اللہ کے بارے میں ایسا قول کہا کہ اس کا ہاتھ بندھا ہوا ہے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس قول کو رد فرمایا اور بتایا کہ وہ اپنی حکمت کے مطابق فراخی سے خرچ اور عطا فرماتا ہے۔ آیت فساد اور جنگ کی آگ بھڑکانے سے بھی خبردار کرتی ہے۔
Explanation
Allah is not limited in His provision. The verse also teaches that hostility, corruption, and repeatedly creating conflict are condemned by Allah.
وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَكَفَّرْنَا عَنْهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ وَلَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ﴿٦٥﴾
English Meaning
If the People of the Scripture had believed and maintained consciousness of Allah, Allah would have forgiven their sins and admitted them into gardens of bliss.
Urdu Meaning
اگر اہلِ کتاب ایمان لاتے اور تقویٰ اختیار کرتے تو اللہ ان کی برائیاں دور کر دیتا اور انہیں نعمتوں والی جنتوں میں داخل فرماتا۔
Explanation
Allah's mercy and forgiveness are available to those who sincerely believe and live with Taqwa.
وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ أَقَامُوا۟ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِم مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ لَأَكَلُوا۟ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِم ۚ مِّنْهُمْ أُمَّةٌۭ مُّقْتَصِدَةٌۭ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ سَآءَ مَا يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٦٦﴾
English Meaning
If the People of the Scripture had upheld the Torah, the Gospel, and what Allah revealed to them, they would have received abundant provision. Among them are people who follow a balanced path, while many others have acted wrongly.
Urdu Meaning
اگر اہلِ کتاب تورات، انجیل اور اپنے رب کی طرف سے نازل کردہ ہدایت کو قائم رکھتے تو ان پر اوپر سے بھی اور نیچے سے بھی رزق کے دروازے کھول دیے جاتے۔ ان میں ایک معتدل جماعت بھی ہے، لیکن بہت سے لوگ برے اعمال کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
Following divine guidance brings spiritual goodness and, by Allah's will, blessings in worldly provision as well.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ۖ وَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُۥ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿٦٧﴾
English Meaning
Allah commands the Messenger ﷺ to convey completely what has been revealed to him from his Lord. Allah promises to protect him from the people while he fulfills his mission.
Urdu Meaning
اے رسول ﷺ! جو کچھ آپ کے رب کی طرف سے آپ کی طرف نازل کیا گیا ہے اسے پہنچا دیجیے۔ اگر آپ نے ایسا نہ کیا تو آپ نے اس کا پیغام نہیں پہنچایا۔ اور اللہ آپ کو لوگوں سے محفوظ رکھے گا۔
Explanation
The Messenger ﷺ was commanded to convey Allah's revelation faithfully and completely without allowing fear of people to stop him.
قُلْ يَـٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَسْتُمْ عَلَىٰ شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ تُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۗ وَلَيَزِيدَنَّ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنْهُم مَّآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ طُغْيَـٰنًۭا وَكُفْرًۭا ۖ فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿٦٨﴾
English Meaning
Say: O People of the Scripture, you have no sound basis until you uphold the guidance Allah revealed, including what has been revealed to you from your Lord. Yet what is revealed can increase some people in rebellion and disbelief.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اے اہلِ کتاب! تم اس وقت تک مضبوط بنیاد پر نہیں ہو جب تک تورات، انجیل اور اپنے رب کی طرف سے نازل کردہ ہدایت کو قائم نہ کرو۔ لیکن ان میں سے بہت سے لوگوں کے لیے نازل کردہ ہدایت ان کی سرکشی اور کفر میں اضافہ کرتی ہے۔
Explanation
The problem is not the absence of revelation but the refusal to sincerely follow it.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ وَٱلصَّـٰبِـُٔونَ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًۭا فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ﴿٦٩﴾
English Meaning
Those who believe, as well as the Jews, Sabians, and Christians—whoever truly believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous deeds—will have no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک جو لوگ ایمان لائے، اور جو یہودی، صابئین اور نصاریٰ ہیں، ان میں سے جو اللہ اور آخرت کے دن پر ایمان لائے اور نیک عمل کرے، ان کے لیے نہ کوئی خوف ہوگا اور نہ وہ غمگین ہوں گے۔
Explanation
The verse emphasizes faith in Allah, accountability in the Hereafter, and righteous action. Its wording should be understood within the Qur'an's broader teachings about faith and revelation.
لَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَأَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْهِمْ رُسُلًۭا ۖ كُلَّمَا جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُهُمْ فَرِيقًۭا كَذَّبُوا۟ وَفَرِيقًۭا يَقْتُلُونَ ﴿٧٠﴾
English Meaning
Allah took a covenant from the Children of Israel and sent messengers to them. Whenever a messenger brought something that conflicted with their desires, some they rejected and some they killed.
Urdu Meaning
اللہ نے بنی اسرائیل سے عہد لیا اور ان کی طرف رسول بھیجے۔ جب بھی کوئی رسول ایسی بات لے کر آیا جو ان کی خواہشات کے مطابق نہ تھی تو انہوں نے بعض کو جھٹلایا اور بعض کو قتل کیا۔
Explanation
The verse warns against rejecting divine guidance simply because it conflicts with personal desires.
وَحَسِبُوٓا۟ أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌۭ فَعَمُوا۟ وَصَمُّوا۟ ثُمَّ تَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ عَمُوا۟ وَصَمُّوا۟ كَثِيرٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٧١﴾
English Meaning
They thought there would be no consequence for their behavior, so they became spiritually blind and deaf. Allah then accepted repentance from some of them, but many again returned to spiritual blindness and deafness. Allah sees everything they do.
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے سمجھا کہ ان کی آزمائش اور نافرمانی کا کوئی انجام نہیں ہوگا، پس وہ حق دیکھنے اور سننے سے محروم ہو گئے۔ پھر اللہ نے ان میں سے بعض کی توبہ قبول کی، لیکن بہت سے لوگ دوبارہ اندھے اور بہرے بن گئے۔ اللہ ان کے اعمال کو خوب دیکھتا ہے۔
Explanation
Repeated rejection of truth can harden a person's spiritual condition, while sincere repentance can bring Allah's mercy.
لَقَدْ كَفَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْمَسِيحُ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبَّكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدْ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَمَأْوَىٰهُ ٱلنَّارُ ۖ وَمَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍۢ ﴿٧٢﴾
English Meaning
The verse rejects the claim that Allah is the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam. It quotes Isa عليه السلام as calling the Children of Israel to worship Allah, his Lord and their Lord. Associating partners with Allah is described as a grave spiritual error.

جن لوگوں نے کہا کہ اللہ ہی مسیح ابن مریم ہے، انہوں نے توحید کے خلاف بات کی۔ حالانکہ مسیح علیہ السلام نے بنی اسرائیل سے کہا کہ اللہ کی عبادت کرو، جو میرا بھی رب ہے اور تمہارا بھی رب ہے۔ جو اللہ کے ساتھ شریک ٹھہرائے، اس کے لیے جنت کی وعید ختم ہو جاتی ہے اور اس کا ٹھکانا جہنم ہے۔
Explanation
The verse emphasizes the Islamic doctrine of Tawheed and presents Prophet Isa عليه السلام as a servant and messenger of Allah.
لَّقَدْ كَفَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَـٰثَةٍۘ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَـٰهٍ إِلَّآ إِلَـٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ ۚ وَإِن لَّمْ يَنتَهُوا۟ عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿٧٣﴾
English Meaning
The verse rejects the belief that Allah is one of three and affirms that there is only one true God. It warns of punishment for those who persist in such a belief.

ان لوگوں کی بات کی تردید کی گئی ہے جو اللہ کو تین میں سے ایک قرار دیتے ہیں، کیونکہ معبود صرف ایک ہی ہے۔ اگر وہ اپنے اس قول سے باز نہ آئیں تو ان میں سے منکرین کے لیے دردناک عذاب کی وعید ہے۔
Explanation
This verse strongly establishes Allah's absolute oneness and rejects associating partners with Him.
أَفَلَا يَتُوبُونَ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَهُۥ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ ﴿٧٤﴾
English Meaning
Will they not turn back to Allah in repentance and seek His forgiveness? Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.
Urdu Meaning
کیا وہ اللہ کی طرف توبہ نہیں کرتے اور اس سے مغفرت نہیں مانگتے؟ اور اللہ بہت بخشنے والا، نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔
Explanation
After warning about serious errors in belief, Allah opens the door of repentance and forgiveness.
مَّا ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ إِلَّا رَسُولٌۭ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَأُمُّهُۥ صِدِّيقَةٌۭ ۖ كَانَا يَأْكُلَانِ ٱلطَّعَامَ ۗ ٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ نُبَيِّنُ لَهُمُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ثُمَّ ٱنظُرْ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ ﴿٧٥﴾
English Meaning
The Messiah, Isa son of Maryam, was a messenger of Allah, like the messengers who came before him. His mother was a righteous woman. Both needed food, demonstrating their human nature. Allah explains the signs clearly, yet some people still turn away from the truth.

مسیح ابن مریم صرف اللہ کے رسول تھے، ان سے پہلے بھی بہت سے رسول گزر چکے ہیں۔ ان کی والدہ بھی نہایت سچی اور نیک خاتون تھیں۔ دونوں کھانا کھاتے تھے، جو ان کی بشری حیثیت کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ اللہ اپنی آیات واضح کرتا ہے، پھر بھی بعض لوگ حق سے پھیر دیے جاتے ہیں۔
Explanation
The verse distinguishes between the Creator and His human messengers, while honoring Isa عليه السلام and Maryam عليها السلام.
قُلْ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّۭا وَلَا نَفْعًۭا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ﴿٧٦﴾
English Meaning
Say: Do you worship besides Allah that which cannot control harm or benefit for you? Allah alone is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: کیا تم اللہ کے سوا ایسی چیز کی عبادت کرتے ہو جو نہ تمہیں نقصان پہنچانے کی طاقت رکھتی ہے اور نہ فائدہ دینے کی؟ حالانکہ اللہ ہی سب کچھ سننے والا اور سب کچھ جاننے والا ہے۔
Explanation
Worship belongs to the One who possesses complete power over creation, not to created beings who depend upon Allah.
قُلْ يَـٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَا تَغْلُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ غَيْرَ ٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَ قَوْمٍۢ قَدْ ضَلُّوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّوا۟ كَثِيرًۭا وَضَلُّوا۟ عَن سَوَآءِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ﴿٧٧﴾
English Meaning
Say: O People of the Scripture, do not go beyond the proper limits in your religion without truth, and do not follow the desires of people who went astray before and led many others away from the straight path.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اے اہلِ کتاب! اپنے دین میں ناحق حد سے نہ بڑھو اور ان لوگوں کی خواہشات کی پیروی نہ کرو جو پہلے گمراہ ہوئے، بہت سے لوگوں کو گمراہ کیا اور سیدھے راستے سے دور ہو گئے۔
Explanation
The verse warns against ghuluw—excess and exaggeration in religion.
لُعِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ عَلَىٰ لِسَانِ دَاوُۥدَ وَعِيسَى ٱبْنِ مَرْيَمَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوا۟ وَّكَانُوا۟ يَعْتَدُونَ ﴿٧٨﴾
English Meaning
Those who rejected faith among the Children of Israel were condemned through the words of Dawud and Isa son of Maryam because of their persistent disobedience and transgression.
Urdu Meaning
بنی اسرائیل میں سے جن لوگوں نے کفر کیا ان پر داؤد اور عیسیٰ ابن مریم علیہما السلام کی زبان سے لعنت کی گئی۔ یہ اس لیے کہ انہوں نے نافرمانی کی اور حد سے تجاوز کرتے رہے۔
Explanation
The verse connects divine condemnation with persistent disobedience and transgression.
كَانُوا۟ لَا يَتَنَاهَوْنَ عَن مُّنكَرٍۢ فَعَلُوهُ ۚ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ ﴿٧٩﴾
English Meaning
They did not stop one another from the wrongdoing they committed. How evil was the behavior they continued.
Urdu Meaning
وہ ایک دوسرے کو ان برے کاموں سے نہیں روکتے تھے جو وہ کرتے تھے۔ یقیناً ان کا یہ طرزِ عمل بہت برا تھا۔
Explanation
The verse highlights the danger of allowing wrongdoing to become normal within a community without anyone encouraging correction.
تَرَىٰ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنْهُمْ يَتَوَلَّوْنَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ لَبِئْسَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لَهُمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ أَن سَخِطَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَفِى ٱلْعَذَابِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ ﴿٨٠﴾
English Meaning
You will see many of them forming alliances with those who reject faith. What they have put forward for themselves is evil, bringing Allah's displeasure upon them and leading to lasting punishment.
Urdu Meaning
تم ان میں سے بہت سے لوگوں کو ان لوگوں سے دوستی اور وابستگی رکھتے دیکھو گے جنہوں نے کفر کیا۔ جو کچھ انہوں نے اپنے لیے آگے بھیجا وہ بہت برا ہے، جس کی وجہ سے اللہ ان سے ناراض ہوا اور وہ عذاب میں مبتلا ہوں گے۔
Explanation
The verse warns against choosing alliances that compromise faith and support wrongdoing.
