English Meaning
And remember when Allah took the covenant from the prophets: “Whatever Scripture and wisdom I have given you, then a Messenger comes confirming what you possess, you must believe in him and support him.” He asked, “Do you acknowledge this and accept My covenant?” They said, “We acknowledge it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”
Explanation
This Ayah speaks about a covenant concerning the prophets and a later messenger who would confirm the revelation before him. It emphasizes continuity between divine revelations and the obligation to recognize truth when it comes.
English Meaning
Whoever turns away after that is among those who deliberately depart from obedience.
Explanation
After mentioning the covenant, the Quran describes turning away from it as a serious form of disobedience. Knowledge of a divine commitment carries responsibility.
English Meaning
Do they seek a way other than Allah's way, while everything in the heavens and earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will all return?
Explanation
The verse draws attention to Allah's universal authority. All creation is subject to Him, and every human being will ultimately return to Him for judgment.
English Meaning
Say: “We believe in Allah and in what was revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, the tribes, Musa, Isa, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not reject any of them, and we submit ourselves to Him.”
Explanation
Islam teaches belief in all genuine prophets and revelations originally sent by Allah. The verse establishes respect for the entire chain of prophethood rather than accepting some prophets while rejecting others.
English Meaning
Whoever seeks a way of religion other than submission to Allah, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
Explanation
Here, Islam carries the meaning of submission to Allah and acceptance of His revealed guidance. The verse presents submission to Allah as the foundation of accepted faith.
English Meaning
How would Allah guide people who reject faith after believing, after testifying that the Messenger is true and after clear proofs have come to them? Allah does not guide people who persist in wrongdoing.
Explanation
This passage concerns people who turn away after recognizing clear evidence. The warning is particularly serious because the rejection occurs after knowledge and acknowledgment.
English Meaning
Their recompense is that Allah, the angels, and humanity condemn them for their persistent rejection.
Explanation
The verse describes the severe spiritual consequence of knowingly persisting in rejection after clear truth has reached a person.
English Meaning
They will remain in it; their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be given respite.
Explanation
The verse continues the warning regarding persistent rejection and emphasizes the seriousness of accountability in the Hereafter.
English Meaning
Except those who repent afterward and correct their conduct. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Explanation
This Ayah brings an important opening of hope immediately after the severe warning. Sincere repentance must be accompanied by reform and correction. Allah's forgiveness remains open to those who genuinely return to Him.
English Meaning
Those who reject faith after believing and then increase in rejection— their repentance will not benefit them if they persist until that state, and they are the ones who have gone astray.
Explanation
The verse warns against deliberately continuing in rejection and repeatedly increasing in opposition to truth. It follows the previous verse's invitation to sincere repentance and reform.
English Meaning
Those who reject faith and die in that state will not be able to ransom themselves even with an amount of gold filling the earth, even if they offered it as payment. They will face painful punishment and have no helpers.
Explanation
The verse emphasizes that worldly wealth cannot purchase salvation after death. The opportunity for sincere repentance and correction belongs to one's life before the final return to Allah.
English Meaning
You will not attain true righteousness until you spend from what you love. Whatever you spend, Allah knows it completely.
Explanation
True generosity is not merely giving away what has little value to us. The verse teaches believers to give from things they genuinely value. Allah knows both the amount given and the sincerity behind the giving.
English Meaning
All food was lawful for the Children of Israel except what Israel had forbidden upon himself before the Torah was revealed. Say: “Bring the Torah and read it, if you are truthful.”
Explanation
The verse challenges claims about dietary restrictions by directing people back to the revealed Scripture. It teaches that religious claims should be tested against authentic revelation rather than assumptions.
English Meaning
Whoever invents a lie against Allah after that is among the wrongdoers.
Explanation
This is a strong warning against attributing something to Allah without evidence. Religious speech carries a serious responsibility; one should not declare something lawful, unlawful, commanded, or forbidden without sound evidence.
English Meaning
Say: “Allah has spoken the truth. So follow the way of Ibrahim, who was devoted exclusively to pure monotheism and was not among those who associated partners with Allah.”
Explanation
The discussion returns to Ibrahim عليه السلام. His defining quality was Hanifiyyah—turning away from false worship and directing worship exclusively toward Allah.
English Meaning
Indeed, the first House established for humanity is the one at Bakkah, blessed and a source of guidance for all people.
Explanation
The verse identifies the Ka'bah at Bakkah (Makkah) as a blessed house established for humanity. It is described as a source of guidance and is central to the worship and pilgrimage of Muslims.
English Meaning
Within it are clear signs, including the standing place of Ibrahim. Whoever enters it should find security. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by those people who are able to make the journey. Whoever rejects this duty should know that Allah is independent of all creation.
Explanation
This Ayah establishes the obligation of Hajj for those who have the ability to perform it. It also mentions the sacred character of the House and the مقام of Ibrahim. The obligation is connected with ability, so it is not a requirement beyond a person's capacity.
English Meaning
Say: “O People of the Scripture, why do you reject Allah's signs when Allah is witness to everything you do?”
Explanation
Allah's complete awareness is a reminder that rejection, concealment, and religious wrongdoing cannot remain hidden from Him.
English Meaning
Say: “O People of the Scripture, why do you prevent those who believe from Allah's path, seeking to make it appear crooked, while you know the truth?” Allah is never unaware of what you do.
Explanation
The verse warns against deliberately obstructing people from guidance or presenting the path of Allah as distorted. It again stresses accountability for those who knowingly interfere with another person's faith.
English Meaning
O believers, if you obey a group among those who were given the Scripture, they may turn you back into disbelief after you have believed.
Explanation
The verse gives believers a warning about allowing others to undermine their faith. The wording says “a group”, not all People of the Scripture, so it should not be generalized beyond the specific warning. Believers are encouraged to remain firmly grounded in revelation and not blindly follow claims that conflict with their faith.
