إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ النَّبِيِّينَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَيَقْتُلُونَ الَّذِينَ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْقِسْطِ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
English Meaning
Those who reject Allah's signs, unjustly kill the prophets, and kill people who command justice are warned of a painful punishment.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک جو لوگ اللہ کی آیات کا انکار کرتے ہیں، ناحق انبیاء کو قتل کرتے ہیں اور لوگوں میں انصاف کا حکم دینے والوں کو قتل کرتے ہیں، انہیں دردناک عذاب کی خبر دے دیجیے۔
Explanation
This Ayah condemns extreme rejection of divine truth and violence against those who call people toward justice. It places the killing of prophets and righteous people among the grave crimes committed against Allah's guidance.
أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُمْ مِنْ نَاصِرِينَ
English Meaning
They are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.
Urdu Meaning
یہ وہ لوگ ہیں جن کے اعمال دنیا اور آخرت میں ضائع ہوگئے، اور ان کے لیے کوئی مددگار نہ ہوگا۔
Explanation
The previous Ayah described their rejection and persecution. Here, Allah states the consequence: deeds performed in opposition to faith and truth do not provide the salvation they might expect. No worldly supporter can ultimately protect a person from Allah's judgment.
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَىٰ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ وَهُمْ مُعْرِضُونَ
English Meaning
Have you not considered those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to Allah's Book so that it may judge between them, yet a group of them turns away and refuses.
Urdu Meaning
کیا آپ نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جنہیں کتاب کا ایک حصہ دیا گیا؟ انہیں اللہ کی کتاب کی طرف بلایا جاتا ہے تاکہ وہ ان کے درمیان فیصلہ کرے، پھر ان میں سے ایک گروہ منہ موڑ لیتا ہے۔
Explanation
The Ayah criticizes the attitude of turning away from revealed guidance when it conflicts with personal preferences. Having knowledge of scripture carries a responsibility to accept truth rather than selectively using revelation.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا لَنْ تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ إِلَّا أَيَّامًا مَعْدُودَاتٍ وَغَرَّهُمْ فِي دِينِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ
English Meaning
That is because they claimed that the Fire would touch them only for a limited number of days, and they were deceived in their religion by the false claims they had invented.
Urdu Meaning
یہ اس لیے کہ وہ کہتے تھے کہ ہمیں آگ صرف چند گنے ہوئے دن ہی چھوئے گی، اور جو باتیں وہ اپنے دین میں گھڑتے تھے انہوں نے انہیں دھوکے میں ڈال دیا تھا۔
Explanation
The verse warns against false confidence in salvation. A person should not invent religious guarantees for themselves and then use those claims to excuse wrongdoing. Accountability belongs to Allah, not to human assumptions.
فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جَمَعْنَاهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ وَوُفِّيَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ
English Meaning
How will it be when We gather them for a Day about which there is no doubt, and every soul is fully repaid for what it earned, without anyone being wronged?
Urdu Meaning
پھر اس وقت کیا حال ہوگا جب ہم انہیں اس دن جمع کریں گے جس میں کوئی شک نہیں، اور ہر شخص کو اس کے کیے کا پورا بدلہ دیا جائے گا، اور کسی پر ظلم نہیں ہوگا؟
Explanation
The Ayah brings the discussion back to the Day of Judgment. Every person will face a completely just reckoning. The statement that no one will be wronged emphasizes Allah's perfect justice.
English Meaning
Say: O Allah, Owner of all sovereignty! You give authority to whom You will and take it away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and humble whom You will. All good is in Your hand. Surely, You have power over everything.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اے اللہ! بادشاہی کے مالک! تو جسے چاہتا ہے اقتدار دیتا ہے اور جس سے چاہتا ہے اقتدار لے لیتا ہے۔ تو جسے چاہتا ہے عزت دیتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے ذلت دیتا ہے۔ ہر بھلائی تیرے ہی ہاتھ میں ہے۔ بے شک تو ہر چیز پر قادر ہے۔
Explanation
This is a powerful declaration that ultimate authority belongs to Allah. Human power, status, honor, and political authority are temporary and ultimately subject to Allah's will.
تُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَتُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَتُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ وَتُخْرِجُ الْمَيِّتَ مِنَ الْحَيِّ وَتَرْزُقُ مَنْ تَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
English Meaning
You cause the night to enter into the day and the day to enter into the night. You bring the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living, and You provide for whom You will without measure.
Urdu Meaning
تو رات کو دن میں داخل کرتا ہے اور دن کو رات میں داخل کرتا ہے، زندہ کو مردہ سے نکالتا ہے اور مردہ کو زندہ سے نکالتا ہے، اور جسے چاہتا ہے بے حساب رزق دیتا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse presents signs of Allah's power in the changing of night and day, life and death, and provision. It reminds believers that creation operates under Allah's authority and that His provision is not limited by human expectations.
English Meaning
Believers should not take those who reject faith as protecting allies in preference to fellow believers. Whoever does so cuts himself off from the proper allegiance to Allah, except when necessary as a precaution against harm. Allah warns you to be mindful of Him, and to Allah is the final return.
Explanation
The verse concerns allegiance and protection, not ordinary kindness or fair treatment toward people of other faiths. The Quran elsewhere commands justice and kindness toward those who do not fight Muslims because of their faith. The exception mentioned here also recognizes situations where a person must protect themselves from genuine danger.
قُلْ إِنْ تُخْفُوا مَا فِي صُدُورِكُمْ أَوْ تُبْدُوهُ يَعْلَمْهُ اللَّهُ ۗ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
English Meaning
Say: Whether you conceal what is within your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it. He knows everything in the heavens and the earth, and Allah has power over all things.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: تم اپنے سینوں میں جو کچھ چھپاؤ یا اسے ظاہر کرو، اللہ اسے جانتا ہے۔ وہ آسمانوں اور زمین کی ہر چیز کو جانتا ہے، اور اللہ ہر چیز پر قادر ہے۔
Explanation
Allah's knowledge encompasses both outward actions and hidden intentions. This should encourage sincerity because a person cannot hide their true motives from Allah.
English Meaning
On the Day when every soul will find whatever good it did brought before it, and whatever evil it did as well, it will wish there were a great distance between itself and that evil. Allah warns you to be mindful of Him, and Allah is Most Compassionate toward His servants.
Urdu Meaning
جس دن ہر شخص اپنے کیے ہوئے نیک اعمال کو سامنے موجود پائے گا اور اپنے کیے ہوئے برے اعمال کو بھی، تو وہ چاہے گا کہ اس کے اور اس برائی کے درمیان بہت دوری ہوتی۔ اللہ تمہیں اپنے بارے میں خبردار کرتا ہے، اور اللہ اپنے بندوں پر بہت مہربان ہے۔
Explanation
The verse describes the reality of accountability: deeds will be brought before their owners. The warning is immediately balanced with a reminder of Allah's compassion, encouraging people to turn toward Him before that Day arrives.
قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
English Meaning
Say: If you truly love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اگر تم اللہ سے محبت کرتے ہو تو میری پیروی کرو، اللہ تم سے محبت کرے گا اور تمہارے گناہ بخش دے گا۔ اور اللہ بہت بخشنے والا، نہایت رحم والا ہے۔
Explanation
This is one of the most important verses concerning love of Allah. The Quran gives a practical sign of genuine love: following the Messenger ﷺ. Love is therefore not merely an emotion; it is expressed through obedience, worship, and following prophetic guidance.
قُلْ أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ ۖ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْكَافِرِينَ
English Meaning
Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger. But if they turn away, then Allah does not love those who reject faith.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: اللہ اور رسول کی اطاعت کرو۔ پھر اگر وہ منہ موڑیں تو بے شک اللہ منکرین کو پسند نہیں کرتا۔
Explanation
Ayah 31 mentioned following the Messenger as a sign of love for Allah. This Ayah reinforces that relationship through obedience. Faith requires a willingness to follow divine guidance rather than merely claiming belief.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَىٰ آدَمَ وَنُوحًا وَآلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلَ عِمْرَانَ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ
English Meaning
Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran above the people of their times.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک اللہ نے آدم، نوح، آلِ ابراہیم اور آلِ عمران کو جہانوں پر منتخب فرمایا۔
Explanation
This Ayah introduces the important families whose stories are connected to the themes that follow. Adam and Noah represent early prophetic history, while the families of Abraham and Imran lead the narrative toward figures such as Maryam and Isa.
ذُرِّيَّةً بَعْضُهَا مِنْ بَعْضٍ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
English Meaning
They were descendants of one another, and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Urdu Meaning
یہ ایک دوسرے کی نسل سے تھے، اور اللہ سب کچھ سننے والا، سب کچھ جاننے والا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse connects these chosen families through lineage and shared prophetic history. Allah's knowledge encompasses their words, actions, and circumstances.
إِذْ قَالَتِ امْرَأَتُ عِمْرَانَ رَبِّ إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لَكَ مَا فِي بَطْنِي مُحَرَّرًا فَتَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
English Meaning
When the wife of Imran said: My Lord, I dedicate what is in my womb exclusively to Your service, so accept it from me. Surely, You are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Urdu Meaning
جب عمران کی بیوی نے کہا: اے میرے رب! میرے پیٹ میں جو بچہ ہے میں اسے تیری خدمت کے لیے مخصوص کرتی ہوں، پس اسے میری طرف سے قبول فرما۔ بے شک تو ہی سب کچھ سننے والا، جاننے والا ہے۔
Explanation
The story of the family of Imran begins with a sincere supplication and dedication to Allah. She intended her unborn child to be devoted to the service of Allah. This demonstrates sincerity, hope, and reliance upon Allah before the child was even born.
English Meaning
When she gave birth to her, she said: My Lord, I have given birth to a girl—and Allah knew best what she had given birth to. She named her Maryam and sought Allah's protection for her and her descendants from Satan, the rejected.
Urdu Meaning
پھر جب اس نے اسے جنم دیا تو کہا: اے میرے رب! میں نے اسے لڑکی جنا ہے، اور اللہ خوب جانتا تھا کہ اس نے کیا جنا ہے۔ اور میں نے اس کا نام مریم رکھا ہے، اور میں اسے اور اس کی اولاد کو شیطان مردود سے تیری پناہ میں دیتی ہوں۔
Explanation
The child was named Maryam. The mother had initially expected a different outcome for her dedication, but Allah's plan was greater. She then entrusted Maryam and her future descendants to Allah's protection. This introduces Maryam as a central figure in the Surah.
English Meaning
Her Lord accepted her graciously, caused her to grow in a beautiful manner, and placed her under the care of Zakariyya. Whenever Zakariyya entered her place of worship, he found provision with her. He asked, “Maryam, where did this come from?” She replied, “It is from Allah. Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.”
Explanation
Allah accepted Maryam and gave her a special upbringing under the care of Prophet Zakariyya عليه السلام. The unexpected provision she received became a sign of Allah's generosity and directly inspired Zakariyya's own supplication for a child in the following verses. This passage also emphasizes that Allah's provision is not restricted by ordinary expectations.
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ
English Meaning
There, Zakariyya called upon his Lord and said: My Lord, grant me from Your presence a righteous offspring. Surely, You hear every prayer.
Urdu Meaning
وہیں زکریا نے اپنے رب سے دعا کی: اے میرے رب! مجھے اپنے پاس سے پاکیزہ اولاد عطا فرما۔ بے شک تو دعا سننے والا ہے۔
Explanation
Seeing Allah's special provision for Maryam strengthened Zakariyya's hope. Although the circumstances appeared difficult, he turned directly to Allah and asked for righteous offspring. This teaches believers never to consider sincere dua pointless simply because the circumstances appear difficult.
فَنَادَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي فِي الْمِحْرَابِ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحْيَىٰ مُصَدِّقًا بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَسَيِّدًا وَحَصُورًا وَنَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
English Meaning
Then the angels called to him while he was standing in prayer in the sanctuary: Allah gives you good news of Yahya, who will confirm a Word from Allah, be honorable and restrained, and be a prophet from among the righteous.
Urdu Meaning
پھر فرشتوں نے اسے پکارا جبکہ وہ محراب میں کھڑے نماز پڑھ رہے تھے: اللہ تمہیں یحییٰ کی خوشخبری دیتا ہے، جو اللہ کی طرف سے ایک کلمے کی تصدیق کرنے والے، سردار، پاک دامن اور صالحین میں سے نبی ہوں گے۔
Explanation
Allah answered Zakariyya's prayer with the good news of Yahya (John) عليه السلام. The verse describes several qualities of Yahya: he would confirm a Word from Allah, possess honor and self-restraint, and be a prophet among the righteous. The timing of the announcement while Zakariyya was engaged in Prayer highlights the importance of turning to Allah in worship.
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ وَقَدْ بَلَغَنِيَ الْكِبَرُ وَامْرَأَتِي عَاقِرٌ ۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ اللَّهُ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ
English Meaning
He said: My Lord, how can I have a son when old age has already reached me and my wife is barren? He said: That is how Allah does what He wills.
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے کہا: اے میرے رب! میرے ہاں لڑکا کیسے ہوگا جبکہ مجھے بڑھاپا پہنچ چکا ہے اور میری بیوی بانجھ ہے؟ فرمایا: اسی طرح اللہ جو چاہتا ہے کرتا ہے۔
Explanation
Zakariyya expressed amazement at the news because, from an ordinary human perspective, having a child seemed extremely unlikely. Allah's response reminds him that divine power is not restricted by ordinary human circumstances. The story prepares the reader for the extraordinary events surrounding Yahya and later Isa عليهما السلام. Quran.com and the Quranic Arabic Corpus confirm the Arabic wording and context of 3:40.
