English Meaning
Alif, Lam, Meem.
Urdu Meaning
الف، لام، میم۔
Explanation
This is one of the Quranic disconnected letters (Huruf Muqatta'at) that appear at the beginning of several Surahs. Their complete intended meaning is known to Allah. The Quranic Arabic Corpus identifies these letters as Quranic initials.
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ
English Meaning
Allah—there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all.
Urdu Meaning
اللہ، اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں۔ وہ ہمیشہ زندہ اور سب کو قائم رکھنے والا ہے۔
Explanation
The Surah begins by establishing the foundation of faith: Allah alone deserves worship. His names Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum emphasize His perfect life and His complete sustaining authority over creation.
نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَأَنْزَلَ التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ
English Meaning
He has revealed the Book to you in truth, confirming what came before it, and He previously revealed the Torah and the Gospel.
Urdu Meaning
اسی نے آپ پر حق کے ساتھ یہ کتاب نازل کی جو اس سے پہلے نازل ہونے والی کتابوں کی تصدیق کرتی ہے، اور اسی نے تورات اور انجیل نازل کیں۔
Explanation
The Quran presents itself as divine revelation that confirms the genuine revelation that came before it. The verse specifically mentions the Torah and Gospel as revelations sent by Allah.
مِنْ قَبْلُ هُدًى لِلنَّاسِ وَأَنْزَلَ الْفُرْقَانَ ۗ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو انْتِقَامٍ
English Meaning
Before this, they were guidance for humanity, and He also revealed the Criterion that distinguishes truth from falsehood. Those who reject Allah's signs will face severe punishment. Allah is Almighty and fully capable of recompense.
Urdu Meaning
یہ کتابیں اس سے پہلے لوگوں کے لیے ہدایت تھیں، اور اللہ نے فرقان بھی نازل کیا جو حق اور باطل میں فرق کرتا ہے۔ جو لوگ اللہ کی آیات کا انکار کرتے ہیں ان کے لیے سخت عذاب ہے، اور اللہ غالب اور بدلہ لینے پر قادر ہے۔
Explanation
Allah describes revelation as guidance and as a Furqan, a criterion by which truth and falsehood can be distinguished. The verse also warns against knowingly rejecting Allah's signs.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ
English Meaning
Nothing in the earth or in the heavens is hidden from Allah.
Urdu Meaning
یقیناً زمین اور آسمان میں کوئی چیز بھی اللہ سے پوشیدہ نہیں۔
Explanation
Allah's knowledge is complete. Nothing—whether visible or hidden, public or private—is outside His knowledge. This establishes an important foundation for faith: human beings may hide things from others, but nothing can be hidden from Allah.
هُوَ الَّذِي يُصَوِّرُكُمْ فِي الْأَرْحَامِ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ ۚ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
English Meaning
He is the One who forms you in the wombs as He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Urdu Meaning
وہی ہے جو ماؤں کے رحموں میں تمہاری صورتیں جس طرح چاہتا ہے بناتا ہے۔ اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ غالب اور حکمت والا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse directs attention to human creation itself. Allah determines the formation of each person in the womb according to His wisdom. It concludes again with Tawhid: He alone possesses ultimate power and wisdom.
English Meaning
He is the One who revealed the Book to you. Some verses are clear and foundational, while others are less explicit. Those with deviation in their hearts pursue the less explicit verses seeking confusion and interpretation. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, “We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.” Only people of understanding take heed.
Explanation
This Ayah gives an important principle for understanding the Quran. The Quran contains clear foundational verses as well as verses requiring deeper understanding. The problem is not the existence of such verses; rather, the verse warns against deliberately using them to create confusion or pursue personal interpretations.
رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ
English Meaning
Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Surely, You are the Bestower of gifts.
Urdu Meaning
اے ہمارے رب! ہدایت دینے کے بعد ہمارے دلوں کو ٹیڑھا نہ ہونے دے، اور ہمیں اپنے پاس سے رحمت عطا فرما۔ بے شک تو ہی بہت عطا کرنے والا ہے۔
Explanation
After discussing people who misuse ambiguous verses, the believers make this beautiful supplication. It teaches that guidance is a blessing that should be protected. A believer should not become overconfident about their own steadfastness but should continually ask Allah to keep their heart firm.
رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ
English Meaning
Our Lord, surely You will gather all people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah never breaks His promise.
Urdu Meaning
اے ہمارے رب! یقیناً تو سب لوگوں کو اس دن جمع کرنے والا ہے جس میں کوئی شک نہیں۔ بے شک اللہ اپنے وعدے کے خلاف نہیں کرتا۔
Explanation
The supplication continues by affirming belief in the Day of Judgment. All humanity will ultimately be gathered before Allah, and His promise of resurrection and judgment will certainly be fulfilled.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمْ وَقُودُ النَّارِ
English Meaning
Those who reject faith will find that neither their wealth nor their children will protect them from Allah in any way. They will be fuel for the Fire.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک جن لوگوں نے کفر کیا، ان کے مال اور اولاد انہیں اللہ کے مقابلے میں کچھ بھی فائدہ نہیں دے سکیں گے۔ اور یہی لوگ آگ کا ایندھن ہوں گے۔
Explanation
Worldly wealth and family can provide comfort and support in this life, but they cannot protect a person from accountability before Allah. The verse shifts attention from temporary worldly security to the reality of the Hereafter.
كَدَأْبِ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ
English Meaning
Their fate is like that of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They rejected Our signs, so Allah seized them because of their sins. Allah is severe in punishment.
Urdu Meaning
ان کا انجام فرعون کے لوگوں اور ان سے پہلے لوگوں جیسا ہے۔ انہوں نے ہماری آیات کو جھٹلایا تو اللہ نے ان کے گناہوں کی وجہ سے انہیں پکڑ لیا۔ اور اللہ سخت سزا دینے والا ہے۔
Explanation
The Quran points to earlier nations as examples. The people of Pharaoh had power and worldly resources, yet these did not save them when they rejected Allah's signs. The lesson is that history should be studied as a warning rather than merely as a collection of events.
قُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا سَتُغْلَبُونَ وَتُحْشَرُونَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ ۚ وَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ
English Meaning
Tell those who reject faith: You will be overcome and gathered toward Hell, and what an evil resting place it is.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے کہ جن لوگوں نے کفر کیا ہے، تم عنقریب مغلوب کیے جاؤ گے اور جہنم کی طرف جمع کیے جاؤ گے، اور وہ بہت برا ٹھکانا ہے۔
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to warn those who reject the truth that worldly strength is temporary. Ultimately, every person will face Allah's judgment, and rejection of His truth has consequences in the Hereafter.
English Meaning
There was a clear sign for you in the two groups that met in battle: one fought in the way of Allah and the other rejected faith. They saw the opposing force as twice their number. Allah supports with His victory whoever He wills. Surely, in this is a lesson for people of insight.
Explanation
This Ayah points to the encounter of the two groups at Badr. The outcome demonstrated that victory is ultimately in Allah's hands and is not determined simply by numbers or worldly strength. The believer is encouraged to look beyond the visible circumstances and recognize Allah's power.
English Meaning
The love of worldly desires has been made attractive to people: women, children, great amounts of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock, and cultivated land. These are temporary enjoyments of worldly life, while with Allah is the best destination.
Urdu Meaning
لوگوں کے لیے خواہشات کی محبت خوبصورت بنا دی گئی ہے، جیسے عورتیں، اولاد، سونے چاندی کے بڑے ذخیرے، عمدہ گھوڑے، مویشی اور کھیتیاں۔ یہ دنیاوی زندگی کا سامان ہے، جبکہ اللہ کے پاس بہترین ٹھکانا ہے۔
Explanation
The verse does not say that every worldly blessing is inherently evil. Rather, it reminds us that such attractions are part of the temporary life of this world. The danger comes when worldly desires become more important than obedience to Allah and preparation for the Hereafter.
English Meaning
Say: Shall I tell you of something better than these worldly attractions? For those mindful of Allah are Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever, pure spouses, and the pleasure of Allah. Allah sees His servants perfectly.
Urdu Meaning
کہہ دیجیے: کیا میں تمہیں ان چیزوں سے بہتر چیز بتاؤں؟ متقی لوگوں کے لیے ان کے رب کے پاس ایسے باغات ہیں جن کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہیں، وہ ان میں ہمیشہ رہیں گے، ان کے لیے پاکیزہ ساتھی اور اللہ کی رضا ہے۔ اور اللہ اپنے بندوں کو خوب دیکھتا ہے۔
Explanation
The Quran contrasts temporary worldly pleasures with the lasting blessings of the Hereafter. The greatest reward mentioned here is not merely Paradise itself, but Allah's pleasure. This teaches believers to keep worldly attractions in their proper place.
الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
English Meaning
They are those who say: Our Lord, we have truly believed, so forgive our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Urdu Meaning
یہ وہ لوگ ہیں جو کہتے ہیں: اے ہمارے رب! ہم ایمان لے آئے، پس ہمارے گناہ بخش دے اور ہمیں آگ کے عذاب سے بچا لے۔
Explanation
The righteous do not rely on their deeds alone. Even after believing, they ask Allah for forgiveness and protection. This combines faith with humility, repentance, and awareness of the Hereafter.
الصَّابِرِينَ وَالصَّادِقِينَ وَالْقَانِتِينَ وَالْمُنْفِقِينَ وَالْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِالْأَسْحَارِ
English Meaning
They are patient, truthful, obedient, generous in spending, and those who seek forgiveness during the hours before dawn.
Urdu Meaning
وہ صبر کرنے والے، سچے، فرمانبردار، اللہ کی راہ میں خرچ کرنے والے اور سحر کے اوقات میں مغفرت مانگنے والے ہیں۔
Explanation
This Ayah describes practical qualities of people who possess true God-consciousness: patience during difficulty, truthfulness, obedience, generosity, and seeking forgiveness before dawn. Faith is therefore shown through character and action, not merely words.
شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
English Meaning
Allah bears witness that there is no deity except Him, as do the angels and those possessing knowledge, standing firmly upon justice. There is no deity except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Urdu Meaning
اللہ گواہی دیتا ہے کہ اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، اور فرشتے اور اہلِ علم بھی انصاف کے ساتھ اسی حقیقت کی گواہی دیتے ہیں۔ اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ غالب اور حکمت والا ہے۔
Explanation
This is one of the Quran's powerful declarations of Tawhid. The verse connects true knowledge with recognition of Allah's oneness and justice. Knowledge should therefore lead a person toward truth, humility, and obedience rather than arrogance.
English Meaning
Indeed, the religion accepted by Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture differed only after knowledge had come to them, out of rivalry and transgression among themselves. Whoever rejects Allah's signs should know that Allah is swift in reckoning.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک اللہ کے نزدیک دین اسلام ہے۔ جن لوگوں کو کتاب دی گئی انہوں نے علم آ جانے کے بعد آپس کی ضد اور زیادتی کی وجہ سے اختلاف کیا۔ اور جو اللہ کی آیات کا انکار کرے تو یقیناً اللہ جلد حساب لینے والا ہے۔
Explanation
The Ayah establishes Islam as the religion accepted by Allah. It also warns that possessing knowledge alone does not guarantee guidance; people can still differ because of pride, rivalry, or transgression. True knowledge should lead to submission to Allah.
English Meaning
If they argue with you, say: I have submitted myself to Allah, and so have those who follow me. Ask those who were given the Scripture and those without Scripture: Have you submitted yourselves? If they submit, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the message. Allah sees His servants perfectly.
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to respond to argument by clearly declaring submission to Allah. Guidance cannot be forced; the messenger's responsibility is to convey the truth clearly. The final judgment belongs to Allah, who fully knows the condition of His servants.
