In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Ayah 141

English Meaning

That was a community that has passed away. They will have what they earned, and you will have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.

Explanation

This verse repeats an important principle from earlier in the Surah: people cannot depend upon the righteousness of their ancestors. Earlier prophets and communities had their own deeds, while every later generation is responsible for its own faith and actions.

Ayah 142

English Meaning

Some people lacking sound judgment will ask, “What has turned them away from the direction of prayer they used to face?” Say, “The east and west belong to Allah. He guides whoever He wills to the Straight Path.”

Explanation

This begins the Quran's discussion of the change of the Qiblah. The direction itself is an act of obedience to Allah; all directions belong to Him. The important issue is submission to His command, not treating a physical direction as independently sacred.

Ayah 143

English Meaning

In this way We made you a balanced and upright community so that you may be witnesses over humanity, and the Messenger may be a witness over you. We appointed the former direction of prayer to distinguish those who would follow the Messenger from those who would turn back. It was difficult except for those guided by Allah. Allah would never let your faith be lost. Surely Allah is Most Kind and Merciful to people.

Explanation

The Muslim community is described as an ummatan wasatan—a balanced, upright community. The change of Qiblah served as a test of obedience. The verse also reassures believers that their previous acts of worship were not lost when the Qiblah changed.

Ayah 144

English Meaning

We certainly see you turning your face toward the sky. So We will surely turn you toward a direction of prayer that pleases you. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those given the Scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. Allah is never unaware of what they do.

Explanation

Allah answered the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's longing for the Ka'bah by commanding the believers to face the Sacred Mosque. The change established the Ka'bah as the Qiblah of the Muslim community.

Ayah 145

English Meaning

Even if you brought every proof to those given the Scripture, they would not follow your direction of prayer. Nor would you follow theirs, and they themselves do not all follow one another's direction. If you were to follow their desires after knowledge had come to you, you would certainly be among the wrongdoers.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ was instructed not to compromise revealed guidance merely to satisfy others. Religious truth is not determined by changing people's preferences.

Ayah 146

English Meaning

Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons. Yet a group among them knowingly conceal the truth.

Explanation

The verse addresses deliberate concealment of truth. Recognition of truth creates a responsibility to acknowledge it rather than hiding it because of personal, social, or communal interests.

Ayah 147

English Meaning

The truth is from your Lord, so never be among those who doubt.

Explanation

After discussing disputes surrounding the Qiblah and revelation, Allah emphasizes that ultimate truth comes from Him. Believers are encouraged to maintain certainty in Allah's guidance rather than becoming unsettled by objections.

Ayah 148

English Meaning

Everyone has a direction toward which they turn. So compete with one another in good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Surely Allah has power over everything.

Explanation

Rather than becoming consumed by arguments over religious directions, believers are told to race toward good deeds. The verse shifts attention from unnecessary dispute to constructive action and accountability before Allah.

Ayah 149

English Meaning

From wherever you go out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is certainly the truth from your Lord, and Allah is never unaware of what you do.

Explanation

The command to face the Sacred Mosque is repeated for emphasis and clarity. It establishes consistency in the direction of Prayer and reminds believers that Allah knows and observes their obedience.

Ayah 150

English Meaning

From wherever you go out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it, so that people will have no argument against you—except those who persist in wrongdoing. Do not fear them; fear Me, so that I may complete My favor upon you and so that you may be guided.

Explanation

The Qiblah command is repeated to establish it firmly for the entire Muslim community. Allah also tells believers not to let opposition make them abandon His command.

Ayah 151

English Meaning

Just as We have sent among you a messenger from among yourselves who recites Our revelations to you, purifies you, teaches you the Book and wisdom, and teaches you what you did not know.

Explanation

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's mission includes several connected responsibilities: conveying Allah's revelations, spiritual purification, teaching the Book, teaching wisdom, and providing knowledge that people did not previously possess.

Ayah 152

English Meaning

So remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful.

Explanation

This is one of the Quran's clearest commands concerning remembrance of Allah. Dhikr is connected with gratitude: remembering Allah should lead a person to recognize His blessings and respond with thankfulness and obedience.

Ayah 153

English Meaning

O believers, seek help through patience and Prayer. Surely Allah is with those who are patient.

Explanation

The Quran identifies two powerful sources of strength during hardship: Sabr (patience) and Salah (Prayer). Patience is not passive hopelessness; it involves remaining steadfast while continuing to obey Allah.

Ayah 154

English Meaning

Do not say of those who are killed in Allah's cause, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, although you do not perceive it.

Explanation

This verse teaches that the life granted to those who die in Allah's cause is of a special nature beyond ordinary human perception. It does not mean that they continue ordinary worldly life; rather, Allah gives them a special life known to Him.

Ayah 155

English Meaning

We will certainly test you with something of fear and hunger, and with loss of wealth, lives, and produce. Give good news to those who remain patient.

Explanation

Tests are part of human life. The verse does not promise believers a life without hardship. Instead, it teaches that trials can become opportunities for patience, faith, and spiritual growth.

Ayah 156

English Meaning

Those who, when a calamity strikes them, say, “Surely we belong to Allah, and surely to Him we will return.”

Explanation

This verse gives believers a powerful response to loss: It reminds us that our lives, possessions, and loved ones ultimately belong to Allah and that every person will return to Him.

Ayah 157

English Meaning

Those are the ones upon whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and they are the rightly guided.

Explanation

After describing how believers respond to calamity, Allah gives them a remarkable promise: His blessings, mercy, and guidance. Patience during hardship is therefore not meaningless suffering; it can bring a person closer to Allah.

Ayah 158

English Meaning

Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj or Umrah at the House, there is no blame upon them for performing Sa'i between them. Whoever willingly does good, then surely Allah is Appreciative and All-Knowing.

Explanation

Safa and Marwah are established as sacred symbols of Allah. The verse confirms the legitimacy of performing Sa'i between them during Hajj or Umrah. Allah knows and appreciates every sincere act of worship.

Ayah 159

English Meaning

Those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance We have revealed, after We have made them clear to people in the Scripture, are condemned by Allah and are condemned by those who condemn.

Explanation

This is a serious warning against knowingly hiding clear divine guidance. Religious knowledge carries responsibility. When a person understands an important truth and deliberately conceals it from others, the Quran treats that as a grave wrongdoing.

Ayah 160

English Meaning

Except those who repent, correct themselves, and make the truth clear. I will accept their repentance, for I am the One who repeatedly accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

Explanation

The previous verse's warning ends with hope. Genuine repentance requires more than simply saying sorry: the verse mentions repentance, correction, and clarification. Allah's mercy remains open for those who sincerely return to Him and rectify their wrongdoing.
