English Meaning
When you said, “O Moses, we cannot remain satisfied with one kind of food. Ask your Lord to bring forth for us what the earth produces—its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions.” Moses said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is inferior? Go down to a settlement, and you will have what you have asked for.” Humiliation and poverty were imposed upon them, and they incurred Allah’s anger because they rejected Allah’s signs, killed prophets unjustly, disobeyed, and repeatedly transgressed.
Explanation
This verse teaches the importance of gratitude and contentment. The Children of Israel had received Allah’s provision, yet they became dissatisfied and demanded different foods. The deeper lesson is that constantly focusing on what we do not have can make us overlook the blessings we already possess. The verse also shows the serious consequences of persistent disbelief, disobedience, and transgression.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالنَّصَارَىٰ وَالصَّابِئِينَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
English Meaning
Indeed, those who believe, and those who were Jews, Christians, and Sabians—who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous deeds—will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
Urdu Meaning
بے شک جو لوگ ایمان لائے، اور جو یہودی، عیسائی اور صابی تھے، ان میں سے جو اللہ اور آخرت کے دن پر ایمان لائے اور نیک اعمال کیے، ان کے لیے ان کے رب کے پاس اجر ہے۔ نہ ان پر کوئی خوف ہوگا اور نہ وہ غمگین ہوں گے۔
Explanation
This verse emphasizes genuine faith and righteous action rather than merely relying on a name or group identity. The Quran repeatedly connects true faith with obedience to Allah and righteous living. This verse should also be understood alongside the Quran’s broader teaching about accepting Allah’s revealed guidance and His messengers.
وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّورَ خُذُوا مَا آتَيْنَاكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَاذْكُرُوا مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
English Meaning
Remember when We took your covenant and raised the Mount above you, saying, “Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember what is contained in it, so that you may become mindful of Allah.”
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے تم سے عہد لیا اور تمہارے اوپر طور پہاڑ کو بلند کیا، اور کہا کہ جو کچھ ہم نے تمہیں دیا ہے اسے مضبوطی سے پکڑو اور جو کچھ اس میں ہے اسے یاد رکھو تاکہ تم تقویٰ اختیار کرو۔
Explanation
Allah’s revelation is meant to be taken seriously and followed in life. Merely possessing religious knowledge is not enough; believers should remember and act upon it. The verse connects remembrance of divine guidance with developing taqwa, or conscious awareness of Allah.
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
English Meaning
Then you turned away after that. Had it not been for Allah’s favor and mercy upon you, you would certainly have been among the losers.
Urdu Meaning
پھر اس کے بعد تم نے منہ پھیر لیا۔ اگر تم پر اللہ کا فضل اور اس کی رحمت نہ ہوتی تو تم یقیناً نقصان اٹھانے والوں میں سے ہوجاتے۔
Explanation
Even after receiving clear guidance, people can turn away from it. This verse reminds us that Allah’s mercy is essential for our success and steadfastness. We should never become overconfident in our own righteousness but continually ask Allah for guidance and mercy.
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ الَّذِينَ اعْتَدَوْا مِنكُمْ فِي السَّبْتِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُوا قِرَدَةً خَاسِئِينَ
English Meaning
You certainly knew about those among you who transgressed regarding the Sabbath. We said to them, “Become despised apes.”
Urdu Meaning
اور تم ان لوگوں کو خوب جانتے ہو جنہوں نے تم میں سے ہفتے کے دن کے معاملے میں حد سے تجاوز کیا تھا، تو ہم نے ان سے کہا: ذلیل بندر بن جاؤ۔
Explanation
The verse refers to a group that violated Allah’s command concerning the Sabbath. It demonstrates the seriousness of deliberately breaking divine commands. The lesson for believers is to respect Allah’s boundaries rather than trying to find ways around them.
فَجَعَلْنَاهَا نَكَالًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا خَلْفَهَا وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
English Meaning
We made this punishment a warning for those who witnessed it and those who came afterward, and a lesson for those who are mindful of Allah.
Urdu Meaning
پس ہم نے اس سزا کو ان لوگوں کے لیے عبرت بنا دیا جو اس وقت موجود تھے اور جو بعد میں آئے، اور متقی لوگوں کے لیے نصیحت بنا دیا۔
Explanation
The Quran presents historical events as lessons for later generations. A believer should not simply read about the punishment of earlier people but should reflect on its causes and avoid similar disobedience.
وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تَذْبَحُوا بَقَرَةً ۖ قَالُوا أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ
English Meaning
Remember when Moses said to his people, “Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.” They said, “Are you making fun of us?” He replied, “I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.”
Urdu Meaning
اور جب موسیٰؑ نے اپنی قوم سے کہا کہ اللہ تمہیں حکم دیتا ہے کہ ایک گائے ذبح کرو۔ انہوں نے کہا: کیا آپ ہم سے مذاق کرتے ہیں؟ موسیٰؑ نے کہا: میں اللہ کی پناہ مانگتا ہوں کہ جاہلوں میں سے ہوجاؤں۔
Explanation
This is the beginning of the event from which the Surah takes its name, Al-Baqarah (The Cow). Moses immediately rejects the idea of making Allah’s command a matter of mockery. The verse also teaches believers to treat divine instructions with seriousness and respect.
قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِيَ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَلَا بِكْرٌ عَوَانٌ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَافْعَلُوا مَا تُؤْمَرُونَ
English Meaning
They asked Moses to ask Allah to clarify what kind of cow it should be. He explained that it should neither be old nor very young, but of an age between the two. He then told them to do what they had been commanded.
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے کہا کہ اپنے رب سے دعا کریں کہ وہ ہمارے لیے واضح کرے کہ وہ گائے کیسی ہو۔ موسیٰؑ نے کہا کہ وہ نہ بہت بوڑھی ہو اور نہ بہت کم عمر، بلکہ درمیانی عمر کی ہو۔ پس جو حکم تمہیں دیا گیا ہے اسے پورا کرو۔
Explanation
The original command was simple, but repeated questioning resulted in more specific requirements. This teaches us that when Allah gives a clear command, believers should respond with obedience rather than unnecessarily making matters complicated.
قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا لَوْنُهَا ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفْرَاءُ فَاقِعٌ لَّوْنُهَا تَسُرُّ النَّاظِرِينَ
English Meaning
They asked about its color. Moses said that Allah described it as a bright yellow cow whose color pleased those who looked at it.
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے کہا کہ اپنے رب سے دعا کریں کہ وہ ہمارے لیے اس کا رنگ واضح کرے۔ موسیٰؑ نے کہا کہ اللہ فرماتا ہے کہ وہ زرد رنگ کی گائے ہو، جس کا رنگ بہت شوخ ہو اور دیکھنے والوں کو خوش کرے۔
Explanation
Again, they continued asking for additional details. The passage illustrates how excessive questioning can make a simple command more difficult. The believer should seek necessary knowledge, but should not use unnecessary questions as a means of delaying obedience.
قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِيَ إِنَّ الْبَقَرَ تَشَابَهَ عَلَيْنَا وَإِنَّا إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَمُهْتَدُونَ
English Meaning
They said, “Ask your Lord to clarify for us exactly what it is, because all cows seem similar to us. And, if Allah wills, we will surely be guided to the right one.”
Urdu Meaning
انہوں نے کہا کہ اپنے رب سے دعا کریں کہ وہ ہمارے لیے واضح کرے کہ وہ کیسی ہے، کیونکہ گائیں ہمیں ایک جیسی معلوم ہوتی ہیں۔ اور اگر اللہ نے چاہا تو ہم ضرور صحیح گائے تک پہنچ جائیں گے۔
Explanation
Their repeated questions continued to narrow the requirements. The phrase “if Allah wills” reminds us that guidance and success ultimately depend upon Allah. True submission means being ready to act once guidance becomes clear.
قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا ذَلُولٌ تُثِيرُ الْأَرْضَ وَلَا تَسْقِي الْحَرْثَ مُسَلَّمَةٌ لَّا شِيَةَ فِيهَا ۚ قَالُوا الْآنَ جِئْتَ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ فَذَبَحُوهَا وَمَا كَادُوا يَفْعَلُونَ
English Meaning
Moses said that Allah described it as a cow that had not been trained to plow the land or irrigate the crops, one that was sound and without any distinguishing mark. They said, “Now you have brought us the clear truth,” and they slaughtered it, although they had almost failed to do so.
Explanation
The command was eventually fulfilled, but only after considerable resistance and questioning. This teaches that obedience should not be unnecessarily delayed. A believer should respond to Allah’s commands with sincerity and willingness.
وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا ۖ وَاللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ
English Meaning
Remember when you killed a person and disputed with one another about it. Allah was going to bring to light what you were hiding.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب تم نے ایک شخص کو قتل کیا اور اس کے بارے میں ایک دوسرے پر الزام ڈالنے لگے، جبکہ اللہ اس چیز کو ظاہر کرنے والا تھا جسے تم چھپا رہے تھے۔
Explanation
People may attempt to hide wrongdoing from others, but nothing is hidden from Allah. This verse reminds us that truth can eventually be brought to light and that Allah knows both the actions people display and the secrets they conceal.
فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْيِي اللَّهُ الْمَوْتَىٰ وَيُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
English Meaning
So We said, “Strike him with part of it.” In this way Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His signs so that you may understand.
Urdu Meaning
پس ہم نے کہا کہ اس مقتول کو اس گائے کے ایک حصے سے مارو۔ اسی طرح اللہ مردوں کو زندہ کرتا ہے اور تمہیں اپنی نشانیاں دکھاتا ہے تاکہ تم سمجھو۔
Explanation
The incident demonstrates Allah’s absolute power over life and death. It is also a reminder of resurrection. Allah’s signs are presented so that people reflect, understand, and strengthen their faith.
English Meaning
Even after that, your hearts became hard, like stones or even harder. Some stones have rivers flowing from them, some split and release water, and some fall out of awe of Allah. Allah is never unaware of what you do.
Urdu Meaning
پھر اس کے بعد بھی تمہارے دل سخت ہوگئے، پتھروں جیسے بلکہ ان سے بھی زیادہ سخت۔ بعض پتھروں سے نہریں پھوٹتی ہیں، بعض پھٹ جاتے ہیں اور ان سے پانی نکلتا ہے، اور بعض اللہ کے خوف سے گر پڑتے ہیں۔ اور اللہ تمہارے اعمال سے بے خبر نہیں۔
Explanation
This is one of the Quran’s strongest descriptions of spiritual hardness. Even physical stones can provide water or respond to Allah’s order, while a human heart can become resistant through persistent disobedience. Believers should therefore protect their hearts through remembrance, repentance, humility, and obedience.
أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا لَكُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَامَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُ مِن بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
English Meaning
Do you hope that they will believe you, while a group among them used to hear the word of Allah, understand it, and then knowingly distort it?
Urdu Meaning
کیا تم امید رکھتے ہو کہ وہ تمہاری بات مان لیں گے، حالانکہ ان میں سے ایک گروہ اللہ کا کلام سنتا، اسے سمجھتا، پھر جانتے بوجھتے اس میں تحریف کرتا تھا؟
Explanation
The verse condemns knowingly distorting divine revelation. Having knowledge creates responsibility. A person must not knowingly misrepresent religious teachings for personal interests, arguments, status, or worldly benefit.
وَإِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالُوا آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ قَالُوا أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لِيُحَاجُّوكُم بِهِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
English Meaning
When they met believers, they said, “We believe.” But when they were alone with one another, some said, “Why do you tell them what Allah has revealed to you so that they can use it as an argument against you before your Lord? Will you not understand?”
Urdu Meaning
اور جب وہ ایمان والوں سے ملتے تو کہتے کہ ہم ایمان لائے، اور جب آپس میں اکیلے ہوتے تو کہتے: کیا تم انہیں وہ باتیں بتاتے ہو جو اللہ نے تم پر ظاہر کی ہیں تاکہ وہ تمہارے رب کے سامنے انہی باتوں سے تمہارے خلاف حجت قائم کریں؟ کیا تم عقل سے کام نہیں لیتے؟
Explanation
This verse describes the behavior of people who treated religious knowledge according to personal advantage. It teaches that truth should not be manipulated or selectively hidden. Allah knows the private intentions and conversations of people.
أَوَلَا يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ
English Meaning
Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal?
Urdu Meaning
کیا وہ نہیں جانتے کہ اللہ ان باتوں کو بھی جانتا ہے جنہیں وہ چھپاتے ہیں اور ان باتوں کو بھی جو وہ ظاہر کرتے ہیں؟
Explanation
Nothing is hidden from Allah. This principle should shape both our public and private lives. A believer remembers that Allah knows every action, intention, thought, and secret, even when no other person knows about it.
وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا أَمَانِيَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ
English Meaning
Among them were people without knowledge of the Scripture who knew it only through hopes and assumptions. They were merely following conjecture.
Urdu Meaning
اور ان میں کچھ ایسے لوگ بھی ہیں جو کتاب کا علم نہیں رکھتے، سوائے چند خواہشات اور گمان کے، اور وہ صرف اندازوں پر چلتے ہیں۔
Explanation
This verse warns against following religion without genuine knowledge. Faith should not be built upon rumors, assumptions, or wishful thinking. Muslims should seek reliable Quranic knowledge and authentic teachings rather than accepting every claim made in the name of religion.
English Meaning
Woe to those who write something with their own hands and then claim, “This is from Allah,” seeking a small worldly gain. Woe to them for what they have written and for what they earn.
Explanation
This is a severe warning against falsely attributing statements to Allah. Religious authority must never be used dishonestly for money, status, influence, or personal benefit. It also gives an important principle for our Quran project: we should clearly distinguish Quranic revelation, authentic Hadith, scholarly explanation, and our own explanatory wording.
وَقَالُوا لَن تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ إِلَّا أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَةً ۚ قُلْ أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ عَهْدًا فَلَن يُخْلِفَ اللَّهُ عَهْدَهُ ۖ أَمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
English Meaning
They said, “The Fire will touch us only for a limited number of days.” Say, “Have you taken a covenant from Allah? Allah never breaks His covenant. Or are you saying about Allah what you do not know?”
Urdu Meaning
اور انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں آگ چند گنے ہوئے دنوں کے سوا ہرگز نہیں چھوئے گی۔ کہہ دیجیے: کیا تم نے اللہ سے کوئی عہد لے رکھا ہے؟ پس اللہ اپنے عہد کے خلاف نہیں کرے گا۔ یا تم اللہ کے بارے میں ایسی بات کہتے ہو جس کا تمہیں علم نہیں؟
Explanation
This verse warns against making claims about Allah without knowledge or revelation. A person should not assume that Allah will forgive or punish according to personal wishes. The proper attitude is to follow revelation, fear Allah’s judgment, and at the same time hope sincerely in His mercy.
