وَءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلْتُ مُصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا مَعَكُمْ وَلَا تَكُونُوٓا۟ أَوَّلَ كَافِرٍۭ بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِى ثَمَنًۭا قَلِيلًۭا وَإِيَّـٰىَ فَٱتَّقُونِ
English Meaning
Believe in what I have revealed, which confirms what you already have, and do not be the first to reject it. Do not trade My revelations for a small worldly gain, and be mindful of Me alone.
Urdu Meaning
اور اس پر ایمان لاؤ جو میں نے نازل کیا ہے، جو اس کی تصدیق کرتا ہے جو تمہارے پاس موجود ہے، اور اس کے سب سے پہلے منکر نہ بنو۔ اور میری آیات کو تھوڑی قیمت کے بدلے نہ بیچو، اور صرف مجھ ہی سے تقویٰ اختیار کرو۔
Explanation
Allah calls the Children of Israel to believe in the revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which confirms the truth originally contained in the earlier revelation. The verse also warns against rejecting truth for worldly benefit. Religious knowledge should never be exchanged for temporary worldly interests.
وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا۟ ٱلْحَقَّ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا۟ ٱلْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
English Meaning
Do not mix the truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth knowingly.
Urdu Meaning
اور حق کو باطل کے ساتھ نہ ملاؤ، اور جانتے بوجھتے حق کو نہ چھپاؤ۔
Explanation
This verse gives a powerful principle concerning truth and knowledge. A person should not deliberately combine truth with falsehood in a way that makes falsehood appear true, nor should known truth be deliberately concealed. The command is especially serious when a person possesses knowledge and understands what is true.
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱرْكَعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ
English Meaning
Establish Prayer, give Zakah, and bow with those who bow.
Urdu Meaning
اور نماز قائم کرو، زکوٰۃ ادا کرو، اور رکوع کرنے والوں کے ساتھ رکوع کرو۔
Explanation
The verse joins worship of Allah with responsibility toward others. Salah (Prayer) represents direct worship, while Zakah includes an important social and financial responsibility. The command to bow with those who bow also emphasizes participation in communal worship.
۞ أَتَأْمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلْبِرِّ وَتَنسَوْنَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
English Meaning
Do you command people to righteousness while forgetting yourselves, even though you read the Scripture? Will you not then understand?
Urdu Meaning
کیا تم لوگوں کو نیکی کا حکم دیتے ہو اور اپنے آپ کو بھول جاتے ہو، حالانکہ تم کتاب پڑھتے ہو؟ کیا تم عقل سے کام نہیں لیتے؟
Explanation
Religious knowledge should first affect the person who possesses it. Advising others while deliberately neglecting one's own obligations is strongly criticized. This does not mean that a person must become perfect before encouraging good; rather, it warns against knowingly preaching righteousness while intentionally refusing to practice it oneself.
وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ
English Meaning
Seek help through patience and Prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for the humble.
Urdu Meaning
اور صبر اور نماز کے ذریعے مدد حاصل کرو، اور بے شک یہ بہت بھاری ہے مگر ان لوگوں پر نہیں جو عاجزی اختیار کرتے ہیں۔
Explanation
When facing difficulty, believers are directed toward two powerful means: patience (sabr) and Prayer. A person who is humble before Allah understands that Prayer is not merely an obligation but also a source of strength. The heart that recognizes Allah's greatness finds worship easier to embrace.
ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
English Meaning
Those who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
Urdu Meaning
وہ لوگ جو یقین رکھتے ہیں کہ وہ اپنے رب سے ملنے والے ہیں اور یہ کہ انہیں اسی کی طرف لوٹ کر جانا ہے۔
Explanation
The humility described in the previous verse is connected to certainty about meeting Allah. Belief in accountability changes how a person approaches worship, hardship, and moral decisions. Knowing that every person will ultimately return to Allah gives life a deeper sense of responsibility.
يَا بَنِيٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتِيَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَنِّي فَضَّلْتُكُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
English Meaning
O Children of Israel! Remember My favor that I bestowed upon you and how I favored you over the peoples.
Urdu Meaning
اے بنی اسرائیل! میری وہ نعمت یاد کرو جو میں نے تم پر کی، اور یہ کہ میں نے تمہیں دنیا والوں پر فضیلت دی تھی۔
Explanation
Allah reminds the Children of Israel of the blessings He had granted them. The verse refers to a historical favor and distinction given to them in their time, particularly through prophets, revelation, and other blessings. Such favor was a responsibility rather than a guarantee of righteousness regardless of conduct.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ يَوْمًۭا لَّا تَجْزِي نَفْسٌ عَن نَّفْسٍۢ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهَا شَفَـٰعَةٌۭ وَلَا يُؤْخَذُ مِنْهَا عَدْلٌۭ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
English Meaning
And beware of a Day when no soul will be able to benefit another in any way; no intercession will be accepted from it, no ransom will be taken from it, and they will not be helped.
Urdu Meaning
اور اس دن سے ڈرو جب کوئی جان کسی دوسری جان کے کچھ بھی کام نہ آئے گی، نہ اس کی کوئی سفارش قبول کی جائے گی، نہ اس سے کوئی فدیہ لیا جائے گا، اور نہ انہیں کوئی مدد دی جائے گی۔
Explanation
The verse emphasizes individual accountability before Allah. Wealth, family connections, and worldly status cannot rescue a person from divine judgment. The Quran therefore directs people to prepare through sincere faith and righteous deeds rather than relying on worldly relationships or possessions.
وَإِذْ نَجَّيْنَـٰكُم مِّنْ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ يُذَبِّحُونَ أَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌۭ
English Meaning
And remember when We rescued you from the people of Pharaoh, who subjected you to terrible suffering, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a great trial from your Lord.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے تمہیں فرعون والوں سے نجات دی، جو تمہیں سخت عذاب دیتے تھے، تمہارے بیٹوں کو قتل کرتے اور تمہاری عورتوں کو زندہ رکھتے تھے۔ اور اس میں تمہارے رب کی طرف سے بڑی آزمائش تھی۔
Explanation
Allah reminds them of their rescue from Pharaoh's oppression. Their suffering included the killing of their sons and the sparing of their women. The verse calls this a great trial, reminding believers that severe hardship can be a test while deliverance is a blessing that deserves gratitude.
وَإِذْ فَرَقْنَا بِكُمُ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَأَنجَيْنَـٰكُمْ وَأَغْرَقْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ
English Meaning
And remember when We parted the sea for you, saving you and drowning the people of Pharaoh while you watched.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے تمہارے لیے سمندر کو پھاڑ دیا، پھر تمہیں نجات دی اور فرعون والوں کو تمہاری آنکھوں کے سامنے غرق کر دیا۔
Explanation
The verse recalls the dramatic rescue of the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. Allah saved them while their oppressors were destroyed. Such a major deliverance should have strengthened their gratitude, trust, and obedience to Allah.
وَإِذْ وَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةًۭ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ وَأَنتُمْ ظَـٰلِمُونَ
English Meaning
And remember when We appointed forty nights for Moses, then you took the calf as an object of worship after him, while you were wrongdoers.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے موسیٰ سے چالیس راتوں کا وعدہ کیا، پھر ان کے بعد تم نے بچھڑے کو معبود بنا لیا، اور تم ظالم تھے۔
Explanation
While Musa عليه السلام was away for the appointed period, some of the Children of Israel turned to the worship of the calf. The verse presents this as a serious violation of their commitment to worship Allah alone. It demonstrates how quickly a community can fall into error when faith and obedience become weak.
ثُمَّ عَفَوْنَا عَنكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
English Meaning
Then We pardoned you after that so that you might be grateful.
Urdu Meaning
پھر اس کے بعد ہم نے تمہیں معاف کر دیا تاکہ تم شکر گزار بنو۔
Explanation
Despite their serious wrongdoing, Allah mentions His forgiveness. This shows the greatness of divine mercy. But forgiveness should produce gratitude and reform, not encourage a person to repeat the same disobedience.
وَإِذْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْفُرْقَانَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ
English Meaning
And remember when We gave Moses the Scripture and the criterion so that you might be guided.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے موسیٰ کو کتاب اور حق و باطل میں فرق کرنے والی چیز عطا کی تاکہ تم ہدایت پاؤ۔
Explanation
Allah gave Musa عليه السلام revelation to guide his people. The term Al-Furqan conveys the idea of a criterion through which truth can be distinguished from falsehood. Revelation therefore provides moral and spiritual clarity.
English Meaning
And when Moses said to his people, “O my people! You have wronged yourselves by taking the calf, so turn in repentance to your Creator and carry out the severe punishment prescribed for your wrongdoing. That is better for you with your Creator.” Then He accepted your repentance. Surely He is the One Who repeatedly accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
Explanation
This verse describes the serious repentance required after the calf-worship incident. The wording concerning punishment belongs to the specific historical situation of the Children of Israel and should not be turned into a general instruction for Muslims to punish themselves. The central lesson is the seriousness of associating partners with Allah and the mercy Allah showed after genuine repentance.
وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّىٰ نَرَى ٱللَّهَ جَهْرَةًۭ فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ
English Meaning
And remember when you said, “O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.” Then the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on.
Urdu Meaning
اور جب تم نے کہا: اے موسیٰ! ہم تم پر ہرگز ایمان نہیں لائیں گے جب تک ہم اللہ کو کھلم کھلا نہ دیکھ لیں، تو تمہیں بجلی کی کڑک نے آ پکڑا جبکہ تم دیکھ رہے تھے۔
Explanation
This verse describes a demand for direct visual perception of Allah as a condition for belief. The Quran presents this demand as an act of serious presumption. Faith involves trusting Allah and His revelation rather than imposing personal conditions upon Him.
ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَـٰكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَوْتِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
English Meaning
Then We brought you back to life after your death so that you might be grateful.
Urdu Meaning
پھر ہم نے تمہیں تمہاری موت کے بعد دوبارہ اٹھایا تاکہ تم شکر گزار بنو۔
Explanation
After the punishment described in the previous verse, Allah restored them. The event is presented as another extraordinary favor and another opportunity to respond with gratitude. Repeated blessings and forgiveness increase a person's responsibility to obey Allah.
وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْغَمَامَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
English Meaning
And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, saying, “Eat from the good things We have provided for you.” They did not wrong Us; rather, they wronged themselves.
Urdu Meaning
اور ہم نے تم پر بادل کا سایہ کیا اور تم پر منّ اور سلویٰ اتارا۔ ہم نے کہا: جو پاکیزہ چیزیں ہم نے تمہیں رزق دی ہیں ان میں سے کھاؤ۔ انہوں نے ہم پر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ وہ اپنے ہی اوپر ظلم کرتے تھے۔
Explanation
Allah provided special forms of protection and food for the Children of Israel. Yet disobedience did not harm Allah; it harmed the people themselves. This is an important Quranic principle: human obedience benefits the human being, while disobedience ultimately harms the person who commits it.
English Meaning
And remember when We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from wherever you wish. Enter the gate humbly and say, ‘Relieve us of our sins.’ We will forgive your sins and increase the reward of those who do good.”
Urdu Meaning
اور جب ہم نے کہا: اس بستی میں داخل ہو جاؤ اور جہاں سے چاہو فراوانی سے کھاؤ، اور دروازے میں عاجزی سے داخل ہونا اور کہنا کہ ہماری خطائیں معاف فرما، ہم تمہاری خطائیں بخش دیں گے اور نیکی کرنے والوں کو مزید عطا کریں گے۔
Explanation
The people were given both material provision and clear spiritual instructions. They were commanded to enter with humility and seek forgiveness. The verse demonstrates that obedience involves not only physical actions but also humility and repentance.
فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ قَوْلًا غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِي قِيلَ لَهُمْ فَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ رِجْزًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ
English Meaning
But the wrongdoers changed the words they had been told to say, so We sent down upon the wrongdoers a punishment from the heaven because of their persistent disobedience.
Urdu Meaning
پھر ان ظالموں نے اس بات کو بدل دیا جو ان سے کہی گئی تھی، تو ہم نے ان کے نافرمانی کرنے کی وجہ سے ان ظالموں پر آسمان سے عذاب نازل کیا۔
Explanation
The people were given a specific command, but those who acted wrongly changed what they had been instructed to say and do. Their punishment was connected with deliberate disobedience. The passage emphasizes that divine commands should be followed sincerely rather than manipulated or replaced.
English Meaning
And remember when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, “Strike the stone with your staff.” Then twelve springs gushed forth from it, and every group knew its drinking place. “Eat and drink from Allah’s provision, and do not go about the earth spreading corruption.”
Urdu Meaning
اور جب موسیٰ نے اپنی قوم کے لیے پانی مانگا تو ہم نے کہا: اپنی لاٹھی پتھر پر مارو۔ پھر اس سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے، ہر گروہ نے اپنا پانی پینے کا مقام جان لیا۔ اللہ کے رزق میں سے کھاؤ اور پیو، اور زمین میں فساد پھیلاتے نہ پھرو۔
Explanation
Allah provided water for the Children of Israel when they needed it. Twelve springs appeared, allowing the groups to know their respective places for drinking. The verse ends with a moral command: Allah's provision should lead to gratitude and responsible behavior, not corruption and wrongdoing. The Arabic wording and numbering of 2:60 are confirmed by Quran.com.
