In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Ayah 181

English Meaning

Whoever changes the bequest after hearing it, the sin is only upon those who change it. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Explanation

This verse places responsibility on those who deliberately alter a person's rightful bequest after knowing what was intended. Allah knows what was said and what people do with that information. It also reinforces the importance of honesty and trust when dealing with another person's final wishes.

Ayah 182

English Meaning

But whoever fears that the testator has made an unfair or sinful decision and then brings about a fair settlement between the parties will not be sinful. Surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Explanation

The Quran allows correction when a bequest contains clear injustice or wrongdoing. The goal is not to preserve an unfair arrangement simply because it was written down, but to restore fairness between the affected people.

Ayah 183

English Meaning

O believers, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may develop taqwa.

Explanation

This verse introduces the obligation of fasting. The Quran gives its central spiritual purpose: taqwa, meaning conscious awareness of Allah that influences a person's choices and behavior. Fasting is therefore more than simply staying away from food and drink.

Ayah 184

English Meaning

Fasting is for a limited number of days. Whoever among you is ill or traveling may make up the same number of days later. For those who have great difficulty bearing it, there is a prescribed compensation of feeding a needy person. Whoever does additional good, it is better for him; and fasting is better for you if you only knew.

Explanation

This verse establishes flexibility for illness and travel. It shows that Islamic fasting is an act of worship accompanied by consideration of genuine hardship. The details of fasting are further explained in the following verses.

Ayah 185

English Meaning

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for humanity, with clear proofs of guidance and distinction between truth and falsehood. Whoever witnesses the month should fast it, while the sick and travelers may complete the number later. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you complete the prescribed number, glorify Allah for guiding you, and be grateful.

Explanation

This is one of the central Quranic passages about Ramadan. It connects fasting directly with the revelation of the Quran and its purpose as guidance. The verse also emphasizes that Allah intends ease rather than unnecessary hardship, while requiring the prescribed number of fasting days to be completed.

Ayah 186

English Meaning

When My servants ask you about Me, surely I am near. I answer the prayer of the one who calls upon Me when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, so that they may be rightly guided.

Explanation

This verse beautifully emphasizes Allah's nearness and the importance of dua. It appears in the middle of the fasting verses, reminding believers that Ramadan is not only about physical restraint but also about turning directly to Allah through prayer, obedience and faith.

Ayah 187

English Meaning

It has been made lawful for you during the nights of fasting to be intimate with your wives. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you had been struggling with yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and pardoned you. So now be intimate with them and seek what Allah has prescribed for you. Eat and drink until dawn becomes clear to you from the night, then complete the fast until night. Do not be intimate with them while you are in spiritual retreat in the mosques. These are Allah's limits, so do not approach them. In this way Allah makes His signs clear to people so that they may develop taqwa.

Explanation

This verse gives important practical details about Ramadan fasting: intimacy is permitted during the night, eating and drinking continue until true dawn, and the fast continues until night. It also establishes the restriction on marital intimacy during i'tikaf in the mosque. The description of spouses as garments conveys closeness, protection and mutual companionship.

Ayah 188

English Meaning

Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly, nor use it to influence authorities so that you may knowingly take part of people's wealth wrongfully.

Explanation

This verse prohibits financial injustice, corruption and using legal or political influence to obtain what one has no right to possess. Something does not become lawful merely because someone manages to obtain it through manipulation of authority.

Ayah 189

English Meaning

They ask you about the new moons. Say: they are markers of time for people and for Hajj. Righteousness is not entering houses from their backs, but righteousness is to be mindful of Allah. Enter houses through their doors, and be mindful of Allah so that you may succeed.

Explanation

The lunar phases provide a practical system for measuring religious and worldly time, including Hajj. The verse also redirects attention from unusual customs toward genuine righteousness: taqwa and proper conduct.

Ayah 190

English Meaning

Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you, but do not transgress. Surely Allah does not love those who transgress.

Explanation

The verse places an explicit limit on fighting: believers are not permitted to transgress. The command is connected to those who are fighting them, and the prohibition against excess establishes an important principle of restraint even during conflict.

Ayah 191

English Meaning

Fight them wherever you encounter them and drive them out from where they drove you out. Persecution is more severe than killing. Do not fight them near the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there. If they fight you, then fight them. Such is the recompense of those who persist in disbelief.

Explanation

This verse continues the context of armed conflict and persecution. It should be read together with 2:190, which explicitly prohibits transgression, and 2:192–193, which discuss stopping hostilities. The passage is not a general command to attack people because of their faith; it addresses a specific conflict involving persecution and expulsion.

Ayah 192

English Meaning

But if they cease, then surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Explanation

The passage immediately emphasizes an important limit: when the opposing side stops fighting, hostility should not continue. Allah's forgiveness and mercy are highlighted when people cease their aggression.

Ayah 193

English Meaning

Fight them until persecution ends and worship is devoted to Allah. But if they cease, then there should be no hostility except against the wrongdoers.

Explanation

The objective described here is the ending of persecution and the restoration of freedom to worship Allah. Again, the verse states that if the opposing side stops, aggression must also stop. This reinforces the restriction against transgression found in 2:190.

Ayah 194

English Meaning

The sacred month is for the sacred month, and sacred restrictions are subject to fair retribution. Whoever transgresses against you, then respond only to the extent of the transgression against you. And be mindful of Allah, knowing that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

Explanation

The verse establishes proportionality. Even in conflict, retaliation must not exceed the original aggression. The command to maintain taqwa at the end of the verse shows that justice must remain controlled by consciousness of Allah.

Ayah 195

English Meaning

Spend in the cause of Allah and do not throw yourselves into destruction by your own hands. Do good, for surely Allah loves those who do good.

Explanation

The verse combines responsible spending, avoidance of self-destructive behavior and excellence in conduct. The final command, “Do good,” broadens the message beyond financial spending to a general principle of ihsan.

Ayah 196

English Meaning

Complete Hajj and Umrah for Allah. If you are prevented, then offer whatever sacrificial animal is available. Do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place. Whoever is ill or has an ailment of the head may offer a compensation through fasting, charity or sacrifice. When you are safe, whoever performs Umrah followed by Hajj should offer a suitable sacrifice; whoever cannot find one should fast three days during Hajj and seven after returning—ten complete days. This applies to those whose families do not reside near the Sacred Mosque. Be mindful of Allah and know that Allah is severe in punishment.

Explanation

This is a detailed passage concerning Hajj and Umrah, including situations of obstruction, illness, sacrifice and the fasting associated with tamattu'. The verse repeatedly accommodates genuine difficulty while maintaining the prescribed acts of worship.

Ayah 197

English Meaning

Hajj takes place during known months. Whoever undertakes Hajj in them must avoid marital obscenity, sinful conduct and arguing during Hajj. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is taqwa. So be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.

Explanation

Hajj is not merely a physical journey. Pilgrims are instructed to control speech, behavior and conflict. The verse gives a powerful principle: while physical provisions are necessary for a journey, taqwa is the best spiritual provision.

Ayah 198

English Meaning

There is no blame upon you for seeking the bounty of your Lord. When you depart from Arafat, remember Allah at Al-Mash'ar Al-Haram. Remember Him because He has guided you, although before that you were among those who had gone astray.

Explanation

The verse reassures pilgrims that seeking lawful worldly provision does not contradict Hajj. It then directs attention toward remembering Allah at important stages of the pilgrimage, emphasizing that guidance itself is one of Allah's greatest blessings.

Ayah 199

English Meaning

Then depart from where the people depart, and seek Allah's forgiveness. Surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Explanation

The verse directs pilgrims toward following the proper rites rather than maintaining distinctions of status or pride. It concludes with seeking forgiveness, reminding believers that even during a major act of worship they remain dependent upon Allah's mercy.

Ayah 200

English Meaning

When you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you used to remember your forefathers, or with even greater remembrance. Among people are those who say, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” but they will have no share in the Hereafter.

Explanation

After completing the pilgrimage rites, believers are instructed to increase their remembrance of Allah. The verse then contrasts people whose concern is limited to worldly benefit with those who seek Allah's reward beyond this life. The next verse continues this contrast by presenting the balanced prayer for both worldly good and the Hereafter.
