English Meaning
Believers are told not to ask about matters which, if made clear, could cause unnecessary difficulty or distress. But matters addressed through the Qur'an will be made clear, and Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.
Explanation
The verse teaches believers to ask useful and sincere questions rather than seeking unnecessary details that may create hardship.
English Meaning
Some people before you asked such questions, and afterward they rejected the answers that came to them.
Explanation
The verse warns that asking questions without humility or willingness to accept the truth can lead a person away from guidance.
English Meaning
Allah did not establish the pre-Islamic categories known as Bahirah, Sa'ibah, Wasilah, and Ham as religious prohibitions. Those who rejected faith invented such claims and attributed them falsely to Allah.
Explanation
The verse rejects religious rules that people invent and then falsely attribute to Allah.
English Meaning
When they are invited to follow what Allah has revealed and what the Messenger ﷺ taught, they say that following their forefathers is enough for them—even if their forefathers had no knowledge or guidance.
Explanation
Tradition alone is not proof of truth. Guidance must be measured against Allah's revelation.
English Meaning
Believers are told to take responsibility for themselves. Those who go astray cannot harm them if they remain rightly guided. Everyone will eventually return to Allah, who will inform them of what they did.
Explanation
A believer should focus on maintaining personal guidance instead of becoming consumed by the mistakes of others.
English Meaning
Believers are instructed about trustworthy testimony when death approaches someone making a bequest. Witnesses should be trustworthy and should swear that they will not exchange their testimony for worldly gain or conceal what they know.
Explanation
The verse establishes safeguards for honest testimony and the protection of people's rights.
English Meaning
If it becomes clear that the original witnesses were guilty of dishonesty, other qualified people may take their place and testify under oath that their testimony is more truthful and that they have not transgressed.
Explanation
Islamic guidance places strong safeguards around testimony so that people's rights are not lost through dishonesty.
English Meaning
These procedures make it more likely that witnesses will give testimony correctly or fear that their oaths will be challenged. Believers are commanded to have Taqwa and listen carefully.
Explanation
Accountability can discourage dishonesty and encourage people to speak the truth.
English Meaning
On the Day when Allah gathers the messengers, He will ask how their people responded. They will say that they have no complete knowledge and that Allah alone knows all unseen matters.
Explanation
The verse emphasizes the absolute knowledge of Allah and the limited knowledge of His creation.
English Meaning
Allah reminds Isa عليه السلام of His blessings upon him and his mother: supporting him with the Pure Spirit, enabling him to speak in the cradle and adulthood, teaching him revelation and wisdom, and allowing extraordinary miracles—including healing and bringing the dead back to life—by Allah's permission.
Explanation
The repeated phrase “by My permission” emphasizes that the miracles of Isa عليه السلام occurred through Allah's power and permission.
