English Meaning
And fear a Day when you will all be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be fully repaid for what it earned, and no one will be wronged.
Explanation
This Ayah reminds believers that worldly life is not the final destination. Every person will return to Allah and receive the full consequence of what they earned. The verse emphasizes both accountability and perfect justice: no person's good or evil will be overlooked, and nobody will be treated unfairly.
English Meaning
Believers, when you enter into a debt for a specified period, write it down. Let a scribe record it fairly, and let the person who owes the debt dictate the terms truthfully. Bring witnesses and do not neglect recording the agreement, whether the amount is small or large. This is more just before Allah, stronger as evidence, and more effective in preventing doubt. Immediate transactions may be handled differently, but witnesses should still be taken when contracts are concluded. No scribe or witness should be harmed. Be mindful of Allah; Allah teaches you, and He knows all things.
Explanation
This is the longest Ayah of the Quran and gives detailed guidance about financial transactions and debts. It establishes principles of documentation, fairness, witnesses, clarity, responsibility, and protection against disputes. The purpose is not merely paperwork; it is to protect people's rights and prevent future disagreement.
English Meaning
If you are travelling and cannot find someone to write the agreement, then a security pledge may be taken. But if you trust one another, the person entrusted should fulfill the trust and remain mindful of Allah. Do not conceal testimony; whoever conceals it has a sinful heart. Allah knows what you do.
Explanation
The previous Ayah emphasized written documentation. This Ayah provides guidance for situations where writing may not be practical, particularly during travel. It also emphasizes trust and honesty. Even when someone has been trusted without formal documentation, that trust remains a serious responsibility before Allah. Concealing truthful testimony is also strongly condemned.
English Meaning
To Allah belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. Whether you reveal what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah knows and will hold you accountable according to His perfect judgment. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills, and Allah has power over everything.
Explanation
The Ayah establishes Allah's complete ownership and authority over creation. It reminds believers that Allah's knowledge is not limited to outward actions; He knows what people conceal and reveal. The verse therefore calls for sincerity and awareness of Allah in both outward conduct and inner life.
English Meaning
The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers, saying: “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” They say, “We hear and we obey. Our Lord, we seek Your forgiveness, and to You is the final return.”
Explanation
This Ayah summarizes essential elements of Islamic faith: belief in Allah, His angels, His revealed Books, and His messengers. True faith is followed by “we hear and we obey”—accepting Allah's guidance and responding to it. The Ayah closes by reminding believers that everyone ultimately returns to Allah.
English Meaning
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Every person receives the consequence of the good they earn and bears the consequence of the wrong they commit. The believers pray: “Our Lord, do not hold us accountable for what we forget or do mistakenly. Do not place upon us burdens like those placed upon people before us. Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against those who reject the truth.”
Explanation
The final Ayah of Al-Baqarah combines responsibility with Allah's mercy. Believers are reminded that Allah does not place an impossible burden upon a soul, while the closing portion teaches a powerful series of supplications: for forgiveness, pardon, mercy, protection, and help. It is a fitting conclusion to this long Surah, bringing together faith, responsibility, obedience, repentance, and reliance upon Allah.
